Idaho Falls Community Hospital is looking for a Child Life Specialist to join our team!

JOB SUMMARY:

Uses knowledge of child development, therapy, and psychology to support children and their families through hospitalization and medical procedures. Provides developmentally and psychologically appropriate interventions for pediatric patients including therapeutic play, preparation for procedures, and education to reduce fear, anxiety, and pain.

Please note benefits are based on eligibility according to full-time, part-time or PRN status classification.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assesses the developmental, social and physical needs of pediatric patients and provides appropriate interventions, such as procedural preparations and therapeutic play.
  2. Provides emotional support to patients and families to minimize the stress of illness and hospitalization.
  3. Provides education, preparation and therapeutic intervention for medical events to help children and families cope based on developmental and emotional level.
  4. Assists patients and families with relaxation techniques to decrease stress, increase coping skills, and cooperation during tests and procedures.
  5. Provides diversional activities in the playroom, bedside, and other ancillary departments as needed based on individual capabilities and needs.
  6. Participates in psychosocial, interdisciplinary and/or departmental team meetings and communicates developmental and psychosocial needs of patients and families.
  7. Provides education and information to enhance parental/guardian understanding of hospital system and resources.
  8. Promotes optimal growth and development and enhances quality of life to patients and family members.
  9. Plans and implements services in collaboration with patients, families, nursing staff, physicians, and other interdisciplinary team members.
  10. Performs assigned duties in ancillary departments as directed by management/supervisor (e.g., surgery, emergency department, outpatient clinics, etc.).
  11. Delivers customer service and/or patient and family-centered care in a manner that promotes goodwill, is timely, efficient and accurate.
  12. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  13. Assesses and documents patient's developmental level, emotional state, using informal assessment techniques throughout the hospital stay.
  14. Manages play materials, supplies and equipment for the playroom and for patient use by assuming responsibility for its cleanliness and storage.
  15. Adheres to dress code; appearance is neat, clean and within facility standards.
  16. Completes annual education requirements.
  17. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times and complies with HIPAA standards.
  18. Reports to work on time when scheduled and completes work within designated times.
  19. Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly.
  20. Attends annual review and department in-services, as scheduled.
  21. Attends at least 85% of staff meetings annually; read all monthly staff meeting minutes.
  22. Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  23. Actively participates in performance improvement and quality improvement activities.
  24. May perform additional duties of similar complexity within the organization, as required or assigned.
  25. Required to check emails and be responsible for its content at least once per week.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Applicants must have at least a bachelor's degree in child life, child psychology, or another closely related field to human development. Child Life Specialist certification required or must be eligible for certification, to be obtained within one (1) year of hire. Successfully completed child life internship with completion documentation. BLS certification required within (14) days of hire.

Experience: Experience in a medical or hospital setting required. 1 year Child Life work experience preferred.

Equipment/Technology: Basic computer knowledge and can demonstrate understanding of basic computer documentation systems as needed.

Language/Communication: Has the ability to communicate effectively and clearly with many different people (patients, families, visitors, members of the interdisciplinary team and others).

Mathematical Skills: Basic math

Mental Capabilities: Able to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations. Able to adapt and adjust to changes in patient and family needs in a tactful positive manner.

Interpersonal: Has strong interpersonal skills. Can provide emotional and developmental support to patients and families. Ability to work well with others.
