Status: Hourly/Non-exempt

Department: Preclinical Pharmacology

Reports to: Operations Coordinator

Overview of Position:

A Veterinarian Technician I supports the animal care and husbandry services that are required for study projects in the vivarium. Must be highly motivated in a fast paced and diverse environment in playing an integral role in advancing the development of therapeutic treatments that will help people live longer, healthier lives. Opportunities are available to grow diverse skills and advance within different tracts (technical, managerial, or scientific) within the company. Must be motivated to work within an environment of excellence and close-knit group.

Primary Functions:

· General procedures such as supportive care, assistance with study related activities, and support for endpoint analysis such as blood sampling, tissue collection, necropsy

· Cleans and prepares small animal cages and large animal pens in accordance with training and written procedures

· Provide basic care and animal husbandry by changing cages and providing clean food, water, and enrichment in accordance with training and established processes

· Documentation of daily activities and study related data pertaining to animals and facility issues

· May operate and maintain large equipment

· Works closely with Operations Coordinator to ensure all animal care procedures are conducted in accordance with study protocols and standard operating procedures

· Responsible for making information-based animal health decisions according to established procedures

· Responsible for monitoring, documenting, and reporting on health and behavior of laboratory animals

· Perform routine behavioral or other animal-based research activities and procedures in accordance with training and established processes

· Perform advanced surgical or treatment procedures in support of research activities and animal welfare.

· Performs other duties, as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

· Basic Knowledge of animal health care

· Frequently required to stoop, bend, and/or kneel to reach and move small animal cages

· Dexterity sufficient to manipulate small animals and use a computer to document tasks and activities

· Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

· Must be able to lift 35lbs and work on your feet in shifts up to 4 -6 hours at a time

· Must be able to wear proper PPE such as company provided scrubs, surgical gowns, surgical masks, Nitrile gloves, shoe covers, eye or face protection, and head covers

· Proficiency in performing clinical observations in accordance with the Attending Veterinarian’s guidelines

· Basic Knowledge in laboratory software application and Microsoft suite

· Ability to operate independently to accomplish assigned tasks

· Ability to track inventory including study supplies and study sample inventory

· Ability to provide quality control and validation of tasks

· Willingness to train on various job related techniques

Education and Other Requirements:

· License Veterinary Technician with New York State , preferred

· Prior laboratory animal experience strongly preferred.

· 0- 2 years’ relevant work experience Required

Physical Activities:

· Constantly moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another, sometimes is 4-6hour shifts.

· Ability to handle large and small research animals and work in a clean, up to specific pathogen free (SPF), environment is required.

· Constantly communicating with others to exchange information.

· Constantly assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.

· Medium work that includes moving objects up to 35 pounds. Environmental Conditions:

· May need to handle to some chemicals that are potentially hazardous but all safety and personal protection equipment shall be provided.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $19.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
