Full job description

Hypower is currently seeking Telecommunications Fiber Optic Cable Splicer/Tester to join our team. We offer competitive wages, excellent benefits, and per-diem.

The Fiber Optic Cable Splicer/Tester is one of the most important employees in the overall operation of the company. He or she must have a minimum of 5 years experience. Must be able to pass a background investigation. Must know the use of Single and Ribbon Fusion Splicers, familiar with OTDR End to End and Bi-directional testing as well as fiber power meter testing. Must be able to travel for extended periods of time. Per-diem will be paid during travel. The Fiber Optic Cable Splicer/Tester will report to the superintendent or the General superintendent..

Job Requirements

  • Must have strong computer Skills.
  • Preferred experience with Fujikura Fusion Splicer and EXFO OTDR's.
  • Must be able to travel for 2 to 3 months at a time.
  • Must have the ability to covey information verbally and written form.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly with the public, customers and engineers.
  • Must have a valid Drivers License and clean driving record.
  • Must be able to pass DOT Physical.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Must be able to pass a a drug test.
  • Schooling and certifications preferred but not required.
  • Must be able to work unsupervised.
  • Provide Progress Reports with a Look-Ahead Schedule superintendent.

Field Obligations – In many instances, the Superintendent is a hands-on Supervisor that is required to assist in most installations.

  • Works with field inspectors from municipalities and engineering firms to make certain that the project requirements are met.
  • Schedules and supervises Subcontractors to meet deadlines and for quality control.
  • Conduct confined space procedures.
  • Work around active fiber optic and copper cable networks.
  • Supports fiber optic splicing teams during splicing activities and cutovers.
  • Assists field crews via shovels or equipment with trenching for conduit or hand hole and manhole placement.
  • Install direct buried cable or pull cable through conduits.
  • Assigns work to foremen, equipment operators and laborers.
  • Provides instruction and training in the proper methods and processes necessary to conduct underground construction assignments.
  • Work and operate vehicles and/or heavy equipment (i.e., backhoe, excavators, skid steer, trenchers, forklifts, telehandlers, etc.)
  • Ensure personal protective equipment for self and crew is available and used as required.

Working Conditions

  • The job requires working in all elements, depending on job location, time of year, heat, cold, rain, snow, and mud.
  • The job requires employees to have always required personal tools.
  • Climbing up and down ladders and equipment.
  • Working from various heights.
  • Continuous kneeling.
  • Entering underground excavations, manholes, and crawl spaces.
  • Able to lift over 50 lbs.
  • Wear personal protective equipment as required in the Safety Handbook.
  • Able to work 40 hours per week, overtime as required, night shifts; work out of town if needed.

Qualifications

  • Must prioritize safety before all else and lead by example; must have a minimum of OSHA10
  • Telecommunication Utility field installation experience including but not limited to installation of manholes, handholes, conduit proofing, and fiber placement.
  • Must have 5 years experience in Fiber Termination and Testing.
  • Must know how to use of Single and Ribbon Fusion Splicers.
  • Must be familiar with OTDR End to End and Bi-directional testing as well as fiber power meter testing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, reading, interpreting, and working with Telecommunications and Fiber Optic design drawings and specifications.
