POSITION DESCRIPTION

Currently, HGL is seeking a Staff Environmental Scientist in the New Jersey area. The person hired for this position will be supporting our projects in EPA Region 2 (NY, NJ, PR, USVI) on contracts for the US Environmental Protection Agency, as well as the US Army Corp of Engineers, US Air Force, Department of Defense and Department of Energy. Projects involve environmental due diligence, site investigation and remediation, including design, implementation, and performance monitoring to reach site closure. This position is open to the New Jersey area and is expected to be 90% remote work including ~25% field work, with some overnight travel to non-local project sites in EPA Region 2.


Responsibilities/Duties

The Staff Scientist will be responsible for:

  • Performing and supporting environmental due diligence assessments (e.g., Phase I ESAs) and intrusive site investigations (Phase II ESAs)
  • Leading various field assignments including drilling oversight, environmental investigation, and remediation projects. Assigned tasks may also include: collecting environmental samples; data management support; developing reports; developing and review and interpretation of geological boring logs.
  • Report and document preparation under the direction of project managers and senior staff members
  • Assisting with developing maps and drawings in conjunction with GIS staff members
  • Collecting and interpreting general field data
  • Supporting environmental due diligence assessments (e.g., Phase I ESAs) and intrusive site investigations (Phase II ESAs)
  • Environmental sampling of various media including soil, groundwater, surface water and sediment
  • Performing data analysis
  • Preparing, reviewing, and interpretation of geological boring logs
  • Assist with preparing weekly, monthly and annual reports subject to high level control and review.

Required Skills

  • Phase I/II Environmental Site Assessments / ASTM / Due Diligence
  • Environmental field sampling and report writing skills.
  • A demonstrated history of responsibility, initiative, motivation, and creativity.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Willingness to participate in all project tasks including but not limited to field work, data analysis, and report preparation.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and other MS Office applications.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Team-oriented person willing to conduct a variety of field assignments and write cohesive report sections on the evaluation of investigative results.
  • Detail oriented
  • Confidence and ability to interface with staff, regulators, subcontractors and vendors during field activities and in support of project management/task management activities

Preferred Skills

  • Strong work ethic with the desire to learn and expand role by taking on more responsibilities.
  • Experience with CERCLA, RCRA, DoD, DoE, and/or EPA projects.
  • Project or task management skills.

Required Experience

  • 4 years of related work experience.
  • Phase I/II/TSEA Environmental Site Assessments / ASTM / Due Diligence
  • Performing and overseeing environmental field activities, authoring technical reports, and reviewing/interpreting environmental data.
  • Soil sampling, soil boring installation/logging/sampling, groundwater monitoring well installation oversight, and groundwater sampling..

Preferred Experience

  • EPA Superfund experience. Direct experience working with EPA Region 2 is desirable.
  • Current OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training.
  • Project or task management experience.
  • Soil gas and vapor intrusion field sampling and data processing
  • Ability to obtain professional licensure (PG and/or PE)

Required Education

A BA/BS degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Engineering, Soil Science, Biology, or Chemistry.

Preferred Education

A BS degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Geotechnical/Geologic Engineering. An MA/MS degree is considered a plus but is not required.

Required Qualifications

To perform the duties of this position a person will need to be in good physical health and be able to lift up to 30 pounds in order to perform field related tasks. Field tasks may take place in environments which include rugged terrain and weather extremes. The successful candidate will be required to possess or obtain OSHA HAZWOPER certification and First Aid/CPR/AED training upon employment. Travel, overtime, and moderate physical work are routinely required as part of field related tasks.
