Building Principal

JOB SUMMARY: Position provides leadership and management necessary to administer and supervise all programs, policies, and activities of the school to ensure high quality educational experiences and services for the students in a safe and enriching environment.

EMPLOYEE CATEGORY: Administration

WORK PERIOD: 12 month

REPORTS TO: Superintendent

WORKS WITH: Administrators, certified staff, support staff, classified staff

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION LEVEL: Minimum of Master's degree in an approved program that qualifies for principal certification at the assigned level with the State of South Dakota.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION: Current, valid South Dakota administrator certificate

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use phone and computer see and read computer screen and printed material with or without visual aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on phone; and, to bend, stoop, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead. May occasionally be required to lift 50 pounds or in excess of 50 pounds with assistance; be able to lift and position students with disabilities with assistance; control behavior through physical restraint; assist non-ambulatory students; take appropriate action in emergency situations; and, follow procedures in a calm, responsible manner.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Usually works indoors in a climate controlled environment. Some duties may occasionally be performed outdoors or away from school.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Follows and supports district goals, mission and implements district programs.

Serves as the building's instructional leader and guides, facilitates, and supports the curriculum, instruction, and assessment goals of the District.

Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to use a computer for word processing, spreadsheets and data entry.

Assumes responsibility for the daily management and operations of the assigned school building.

Assists in assignment of all staff members, including hiring of staff to fill vacancies.

Assumes responsibility for the supervision and evaluation of all employees assigned to the building.

Monitors student achievement and works with the teachers to improve student performance.

Provides leadership in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation, along with other district administrators.

Administers the building budget, requisitions needed supplies and materials in compliance with state regulations, policies and regulations of the school board.

Establishes and maintains good relationships with parent organizations, community members, civic, service and professional organizations.

Communicates with staff, parents, students and the community about school programs, activities and events.

Works cooperatively with teacher organization and other groups within the building.

Assumes responsibility for the security, safety of students and appearance of the physical plant.

Attends and supervises student activities and events.

Identifies opportunities for professional growth of staff.

Follows district, state and federal guidelines in providing exceptional children services as eligible, monitors progress of students, chairs review committees and IEP meetings.

Conducts regular meetings with building staff.

Determines building schedules, assigns all staff members and students within the building.

Participates in district meetings and committee assignments.

Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulation.

Continues personal professional growth and upgrading of skills including but not limited to any certification requirements.

Performs health services, if needed, for which training will be provided.

Completes all trainings and other compliance requirements as assigned by designated deadline.

Respects and practices confidentiality both in and out of school with regard to records, activities, and communications relating to all students, parents/guardians, and staff.

Perform other duties as assigned.
