The Humane Society of St. Joseph County is dedicated to furthering our progress as not only one of Michiana’s largest open-admission shelters and adoption centers but also through our leadership in animal welfare and community outreach. Incorporated in 1886, we are one of Indiana’s oldest service organizations and one of the areas largest animal care facility. Servicing the greater St. Joseph County region and multiple municipalities, the HSSJC sees over 3,000 animals each year. Shelter Veterinarian(full-time)

Position Overview

The Humane Society of St. Joseph County (HSSJC) has a mission to instill reverence for all life and to enhance the human/animal bond through the compassionate care of animals and community education. Our Shelter Veterinarian, as part of our team, will be responsible for ensuring the highest quality care for the animals. This is a full-time salary position that may require evening, weekend, and holiday hours. Occasional travel may be required. This position reports to the Executive Director, and works collaboratively with the HSSJC Board of Directors, Leadership Team, staff, and volunteers.

Job Responsibilities

  • Triage, examine, diagnose, treat, and provide routine shelter medicine for stray and shelter-owned animals.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of medical and general care protocols.
  • Ensure and oversee proper animal intake procedures in accordance with shelter policy.
  • Consult and advise on protocols and procedures pertaining to the health of shelter animals, including but not limited to vaccination, administration of medication/supportive care, diagnostic testing, medical evaluations, Fear Free handling, euthanasia, and disease prevention.
  • Perform surgical procedures on shelter and/or publicly owned animals, as needed (e.g., spay/neuter, umbilical hernia repair, lump removal, limb or tail amputation, enucleation).
  • Lead daily medical rounds and develop treatment plans for shelter animals.
  • Work with medical team to provide outstanding patient care to shelter animals and/or publicly owned animals, as needed.
  • Provide training, oversight, mentoring and consultation for medical and support staff (e.g., animal control officers, front office staff, animal placement specialists).
  • Maintain inventory of all necessary medical supplies and pharmaceuticals (including controlled substances).
  • Maintain and reconcile controlled drug logs in accordance with DEA guidelines.
  • Complete Certificates of Veterinary Inspection for shelter animals that are transferred out of state to various rescue partners (use of electronic CVIs is preferred).
  • Provide after-hours advice and/or care on an as-needed basis for stray and shelter-owned animals.
  • Collaborate with the HSSJC Leadership Team and Board of Directors to address operational or staff issues and work towards HSSJC Strategic Goals.
  • Other duties assigned by the Executive Director and/or the Board of Directors.

Requirements

  • Doctoral Degree DVM.
  • Indiana State license to practice Veterinary Medicine.
  • Experience in high volume spay/neuter clinic and/or post graduate surgical training preferred.
  • Two or more years’ experience practicing Veterinary Medicine in a veterinary clinic, hospital, and/or animal shelter or animal control facility preferred, but new graduates will be considered.
  • Candidate must promote and support the overall vision and strategic plan for the shelter.
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License and insurable driving record.
  • DEA Certification and Indiana CSR License- or ability to obtain.
  • NVAP Accreditation or ability to obtain.
  • Experience in shelter medicine preferred.
  • Experience in emergency medicine preferred.
  • Demonstrate success in working with a diverse team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing in a diverse range of audiences and settings.
  • Ability to handle stressful and/or difficult situations as presented by visitors, staff and/or volunteers.

Job Responsibilities

  • Primary responsibility is to perform surgical procedures (e.g., spay/neuter, umbilical hernia repair, lump removal, limb or tail amputation, enucleation) on animals owned by HSSJC and/or other local animal welfare organizations. In some cases, surgical procedures may be provided to publicly owned animals.
