Job Purpose:

The Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA) maintains a thrift store to support its mission and vision through providing a strong revenue stream for the organization. The Thrift Store Assistant Manager is responsible for working with the Thrift Store Manager on the day-to-day operations of the store and responsible for retail operations. The assistant manager is responsible for providing and maintaining excellent customer service relations between store staff and the public at-large, for HSSA employees and volunteers. This individual has oversight responsibility for activities at the thrift store, including but not limited to supervision of employees and volunteers, cash handling, and donations received. This individual is responsible for maintaining retail inventory, ordering, pricing and supervising retail staff.

Essential duties and Responsibilities:

• Ensures Thrift Store and retail sites are well stocked with merchandise, maintains a clean, attractive, and safe environment.

• Represents the HSSA in a professional, polite, and enthusiastic manner.

• Ensures customers are welcomed by staff and volunteers greeting and assisting guests, and responding to guest inquiries and complaints to ensure excellent levels of customer service are always maintained.

• Promotes repeat business and word-of-mouth advertising through the building of excellent customer relations.

• Develops and coordinates retail advertising & marketing plan with the Marketing Department.

• Initiates and oversees projects, programs and events designed to create and sustain a successful retail store: discount programs, inventory selection, display options, sales events, operational procedures, color coding program.

• Maintains a good working relationship with the Online Sales Supervisor.

• Ensures timely processing of incoming merchandise by staff and volunteers, including sorting, cleaning, and repairing of all goods. Responsible for properly disposing of any donated goods which are not usable by the Thrift Store.

• Monitors merchandise standards to ensure quality inventory.

• Establishes standard pricing guidelines for retail merchandise.

• Oversees the arrangement of merchandise displays throughout retail locations to create a pleasing shopping environment.

• Informs Thrift store manager of any staff or volunteer issues or concerns

• Maintains a good working relationship with other HSSA departments and leadership team.

• Keeps employees and volunteers informed of changes in Thrift Store and retail operations of HSSA programs or protocol.

• Ensures good communication with HSSA volunteer department to meet the needs of the Thrift Store.

• Follows safety policy and procedures and ensures that Thrift Store and retail employees and volunteers abide by those policies.

• May drive shelter vehicle in performance of HSSA business.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a large retail space. Able to lift to 50 lb., long periods of standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and working outdoors unloading items in differing climates. Moving heavy items such as furniture, displays, etc.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises Thrift Store and retail staff and has oversight for volunteers and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with HSSA’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work, addressing complaints and resolving problems for the Store.
