Humane Society of South Mississippi is Hiring a Maintenance/Facilities Associate Near Gulfport, MS

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: A team player, able to work in a fast-paced environment. Knowledge of maintenance and repairs; Ability to maintain grounds (mowing, weed eating, etc); ability to problem-solve and create cost effective options regarding projects and repairs; knowledge of safety programs helpful, ability to work independently and initiate projects, construction ability helpful.

Qualifications: Must be 18 or older; must be able to perform physical work: lifting up to 75 pounds; reaching, standing, using eye-hand coordination and power tools, able to stand, bend and perform duties as assigned.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in an animal shelter setting. Exposure to high noise levels, cleaning agents and zoonosis when in the kennel areas. Subject to animal bites and scratched. Able to handle animals of questionable health and temperament.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs landscape maintenance and promptly addresses any concerns. Keeps grounds clear of trash, feces, debris, and safety hazards; makes recommendations on improvement
  • Performs routine repair of Society equipment, caging and kennels, hoses, faucets, appliances. Purchases needed supplies, responds to requests and performs repairs in timely manner; Makes recommendations on improvement
  • Performs maintenance of vehicles including maintaining schedule for routine tune-ups, oil changes, tire repairs & replacements. Makes recommendations on improvement
  • Performs janitorial cleaning and maintaining inventory of cleaning supplies. Purchases needed supplies.
  • Maintains kennel filtration and HVAC system; conducts regular cleaning and filter replacement; makes recommendations on improvement
  • Helps schedule and/or performs special cleaning projects ( i.e. regularly scheduled carpet cleaning, floor waxing, window washing)
  • Acts as liaison with independent contractors/repair companies
  • Maintains inventory of maintenance and cleaning equipment, and tools, in good working condition.
  • Assists in processing and storing in-kind donations concerning facility maintenance ( i.e. yard equipment, washing machines/dryers, shelter supplies)
  • Monitors fire sprinklers, extinguishers; Ensures compliance with fire authority and OSHA.
  • Responsible for maintaining clean and orderly storage areas
  • Helps monitor overall safety of facility: identifies safety hazards ( i.e. hot water heaters, electrical outlets) and takes prompt action to protect the facility and prevent injury to humans or animals.
  • Follows all safety guidelines to ensure a safe work environment. Takes immediate action to address any safety concern or noncompliance of safety rules that could put an employee, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk.
  • Assists the thrift store with bringing in donations and taking out the garbage. Assists thrift store customers with bringing large purchases to their vehicle.
  • Performs regular pickups of linen and donations from casinos, retail stores, and members of the community.
  • Special projects as deemed necessary

  • Is flexible with scheduling and is available when away from the facility as needed to meet the needs of the organization
  • Promotes and follows safety guidelines to ensure a safe work environment. Takes immediate action to address any safety concern or noncompliance with OSHA safety rules that could put an employee, volunteer, client, animal and organization at risk.
  • Promotes integration and engagement of volunteers.
  • Promotes communication and cooperation between HSSM departments.
  • Actively solicits donations, promotes retail/thrift sales
  • Is visible to staff, communicates with directors on significant developments within the department
  • Ensures that policies and procedures are being followed

Work is performed in an animal shelter setting. Exposure to high noise levels, cleaning agents and zoonosis when in the kennel areas. Subject to animals’ bites and scratches. Able to handle animals of questionable health and temperament. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation. Standing, bending, and stretching for 8 10 hours per day. Computer usage.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $11.00 - $17.00 per hour
