Description

The Education Assistant position runs annually from May 1st September 30th. This position is full time, 40 hours per week. The Education Assistant will help with a variety of Education Department events. They will be responsible for assisting educators, implementing programs and experiences for children in a group setting. They will also be responsible for the general safety of the participants and animals. The incumbent will provide high quality indoor/outdoor educational and recreational experiences for participants. These experiences focus on the HARP core mission of educating the community on humane care and interactions with all animals with the goal of reducing pet overpopulation and negative relationships with native wildlife.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Uphold the mission of Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh (HARP) throughout all responsibilities of the position
  • Perform professional onsite camp programming with the assistance of a Humane Educator
  • Participate in games, activities, and other educational experiences during camp programming
  • Manage childrens behavior and be an excellent role model to campers
  • Assist in the preparation of activities for before and after camp care
  • Communicate professionally with parents and other members of the public before, during and after camp programming
  • Assisting in the care and cleanup of Wild and Domestic Education Ambassadors
  • Attend events for public education for the benefit of the Humane and Wildlife Education Department
  • Attend Information Tables at the Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival, which includes wearing appropriate garb and handling Education Birds of Prey
  • Attend off-site programs at schools, libraries, or other venues when a Humane Educator needs assistance
  • Maintain an open line of communication between all staff members to discuss issues, problems, and ideas
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Humane and Wildlife Education Manager, the Wildlife Center Director

Qualifications


Qualifications

  • Education classes or experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or in a related field
  • Ability to lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Experience working with animals in an educational setting preferred, but not required
  • PA Childline Clearance, PA Criminal History Clearance & FBI Fingerprint Clearance
