The Assistant Director will hold responsibilities including but not limited to supervising academic counselors, reporting and providing office representation where needed, and managing a student caseload. The Assistant Director(s) promote student success in support of and in accordance with the College's mission statement, program policies and procedures, and established goals and objectives of Student Affairs and Enrollment.

  • Maintain documentation, data, and reports across various platforms to inform college personnel of student success and retention rates.
  • Integrate data-informed decision-making and evidence-based practices into daily work.
  • Create and manage progress reports from faculty by informing students of their academic progress and providing recommendations to improve.
  • Provide resources, referrals, and information to assist students in navigating the college.
  • Participate in college committees and events to increase visibility for the program, gain knowledge, and build partnerships across the College.
Office Leadership
  • Provide administrative supervision to academic counselors and/or other staff (e.g., part-time advisors, student workers, and/or student services assistants).
  • Contribute to office and area-wide reporting.
  • Represent the Office of Advisement and/or Hudson Scholars program internally and externally, as needed.
  • Provide oversight to office workgroup(s) and report out on progress and goal attainment.
  • Provide regular updates to the Director of Advisement and team regarding established goals and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

What you'll need to succeed:
  • Ability to prioritize and balance responsibilities : This role requires one to be a balanced combination of proactive and reactive- paying attention to trends and anticipating needs, while remaining attentive to situations and responding appropriately, in the moment. In particular, this role requires one to be attuned to the specific needs of students at the North Hudson campus.
  • Clear Communication Style: Superior verbal and written communication skills are required. This role will be collaborating across HCCC offices, so professional communication is a necessity.
  • Master's degree : Required in Counseling, Higher Education, Student Affairs, or a related field.
  • Experience: Two to four years of post-master's experience in academic counseling, advising and/or direct, relational support of undergraduate students, preferred.
  • Technology Skills : Proficient in various computer software programs and SaaS including Microsoft Office suite, Airtable, EAB Navigate, Ellucian Colleague, and similar higher education platforms.
  • Relational skills : Relationship building is a central part of the role, so strong interpersonal and active listening skills are essential. It is important that you balance having a supportive ear with the ability to identify needs, so students and staff are able to realize their personal and educational goals.
  • Creativity: A penchant for out-of-the-box thinking and creative problem-solving will be an asset in this role.
  • Additional Skills: Collaboration, flexibility, innovation, strategic thinking, and a positive attitude.

What will make you stand out as a candidate:
  • Prior leadership ability: You've had experience with prior management or leadership in prior roles. Formal leadership titles aren't imperative, but clear examples of how you've taken leadership are. This role is located at a branch campus, so the role will benefit from someone who is a student advocate able to ground their rationale in data.
  • Bi-lingual preferred : Our College has a linguistically diverse student population, so while not required, Spanish and Arabic language skills are a priority for the College.

About Hudson County Community College

Hudson County Community College was established in 1974 when the New Jersey Board of Higher Education approved the establishment of a community college commission in Hudson County, the first of its kind in the country. The College began as a contract college. As one of only two such colleges in the United States, and the sole contract college in New Jersey, its goal was to offer programs to students that reflected the nature of the job market. Hudson County Community College received its official name in 1981. In the past several years, Hudson County Community College has realized unprecedente...d growth, with enrollment and graduation rates increasing significantly each year. Enrollment has risen from 4,129 students in 1996 to 9,400 in Fall 2011.This growth is a result of careful and thoughtful planning to (1) enlarge the depth and number of course/class offerings (including scheduling sunrise, weekend, and online classes), (2) enhance students experiences (including the establishment of a central counseling prog ram, and reorganized student activities and student government prog rams), and (3) expand the number and quality of its facilities by adding more than eight state-of-the-art buildings to the Colleges campuses.
