Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT)

THIS JOB IS OPEN COMPETITIVE UNTIL FILLED

Position Summary:Under general supervision of the captain, provides direct services, individually as a member of a team in response to fire, rescue, hazmat and other calls for service. Additionally, the Firefighter/EMT will response to medical emergencies and provide prehospital basic life support care to victims of injury and illness. A Firefighter/EMT may potentially be the highest medical authority at an emergency scene in the absence of a Paramedic and will make medical decisions based on standing orders, protocols and orders from on and off line medical direction.Duties:Essential duties are a broad overview of the position expectations and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of skills or responsibilities. The summary of skills is intended to provide a generalized job description and what it takes from the employee to perform it. Above the generalized list of duties, the employee is responsible for all other duties as assigned by the rank of captain or above.1. Performs complex diagnostics and medical procedures including, but not limited to: Intravenous cannulation, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation(CPR), cervical spine stabilization, Automated External Defibrillator (AED), splinting and injury management.2. Delivers medications including oxygen to patients as necessary and within the EMT scope of practice.3. Drives and operates apparatus and ambulances as assigned and operates as a member of a paramedic engine or paramedic ambulance and/or an EMT engine or EMT ambulance.4. Accurately completes written and verbal reports on patient care in accordance with prehospital and departmental policy.5. Performs a thorough, daily inspection of the apparatus to which he/she is assigned and notifies the captain and/or Paramedic of any condition requiring repair or maintenance6. Ensures that inventory of supplies and equipment is complete and assures that the equipment and apparatus are maintained in good working order.7. Comprehends and documents complete and accurate patient histories.8. Checks medications and equipment daily to ensure proper control and inventory9. Participates in firefighting activities and duties as assigned.10. Lays hose lines, operates nozzles, pumps and hydrants, utilizes fire extinguishers and performs other actions to suppress fire.11. Operates hydraulic, manual and electric power tools.12. Participates is salvage operations and post fire operations using salvage covers, floor runners and other related equipment to limit and reduce property damage from heat, smoke, fire, gases and water.13. Participates in training14. Participates in fire and life safety inspections of commercial and residential occupancies and/or structures15. Participates in general maintenance of fire equipment, hydrants and other tools necessary to mitigate hazards and ensure operational preparedness.16. Responds to scene of accidents or acute illness for which emergency medical care has been requested17. Required to transfer, lift and move patients while employing appropriate body mechanics, safety and lifting techniques.18. Responds to hazardous materials incidents at the operations level and responds to other calls for assistance as requested by the public.19. Participates in public education programs in schools, civic programs and/or groups, and other locations as necessary or requested.20. Utilizes a department computer to accomplish training, patient care documentation, record keeping, pre incident planning and other job related functions.21. Drives and operates fire apparatus under the direction of the captain and according to all procedures and policies of the department.22. Participates in daily physical training.23. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:Education & Experience:

• High School Diploma or equivalent.Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

Knowledge of:1. Triage, treatment and patient transport protocols.2. Standing orders and off line medical direction.3. Basic Life Support Procedures (BLS).4. Medical terminology.5. Techniques and methods of fire suppression.6. All BLS related equipment necessary accomplish to job functions.7. Some knowledge of hazardous materials relative to fire suppression.8. Incident Command Systems.9. Department goals and objectives.10. Fire prevention and community risk reduction aspects of the fire service.

Ability to:1. Follow both written and oral direction or communication.2. Communicate in a written and verbal manner.3. Exercise appropriate safety tactics in firefighting and medical emergencies.4. Perform at an Basic life support level as necessary for patient care.5. Handle high levels of personal stress and maintain composure under a variety of adverse conditions.6. Respond to, analyze and mitigate hazards pertaining to life safety and property conservation7. Utilize power tools of a hydraulic, electronic and pneumatic nature8. Utilize personal protective equipment including, but not limited to firefighting ensemble, self contained breathing apparatus; medical personal protective equipment including, gloves, goggles, gowns or other barrier devices.9. Operate various tools and equipment necessary to firefighting and medical functions.10. Operate a computer for essential department tasks.

Preferred Qualifications:• Associates Degree in fire science, public administration or other related field• ICS 300, 400• Wildland Firefighter 2• IFSAC or related Firefighter 1&2*** Any combination of education, training and experience which provides required requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position, may be substituted for evaluation at the discretion of the Director/Fire Chief.

Performance Aptitude:

Physical abilities: Frequently sits, talks, hears and stands for potentially extended periods of time. Walks and uses hands to manipulate, handle and operate objects, tools, or controls. Reaches with hands and arms. Occasionally climbs or balances, stoops, kneels, crouches, and crawls. Employee is required to have near vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Employee must be able to move independently up to 50 pounds, pull objects weighing 40 pounds or more and will frequently lift objects in excess of 100 poundsEquipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials: Tasks require the ability to operate computers, basic office equipment, telephone, two way radios, measuring devices, MDT, power tools, hand tools, chain saws, shovels, brooms, ladders, exhaust fans. Position also requires the ability to operate a car, truck, fire apparatus, ambulance, patient restraints, first aid equipment, oxygen, electronic testing equipment, medical equipment, and patient lifting devices. Furthermore, the position requires employee to utilize breathing apparatus, hearing and eye protection, firefighting clothing and hazardous chemical clothing.Environmental Factors: Some work is performed in a fire station environment but responds to emergencies and is subject to potential personal danger. Exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, explosives, firearms, water hazards, violence, disease and pathogenic substances. Exposure to hazardous conditions such as mechanical, electrical, chemical, burns, explosives, heights, physical injury, and fast moving vehicles. Exposure to toxic fumes, irritants, particulates, biological (infectious) and non-biological hazards, and/or heated gases, despite the use of personal protective ensembles and SCBA. Unpredictable emergency requirements for prolonged periods of extreme physical exertion without benefit of warm-up, scheduled rest periods, meals, access to medication(s), or hydration. Employee may frequently experience interruption in sleep, meals and/or other activities
