POSITION SUMMARY:

The Tribal Education Coordinator is the key tribal employee for Education and Training Programs. The Coordinator’s job is to run the Tribe’s P.L. 102-477 funded contract education programs such as Johnson O’Malley, Higher Education and Adult Vocational Scholarships. The Education Coordinator is the contact for students wishing to enroll in boarding schools, community college, vocational technical institutions, and four-year institutions of learning. The Coordinator is given the authority to administer and enforce all aspects of the higher education policies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Administer (or coordinate the administration of) the Tribe’s Johnson O’Malley, Adult Education, and Higher Education and Natural Resources scholarship programs.
  • Directly assist and advocate for tribal students of all ages and their families as they interact with schools and other education programs and entities.
  • Prepare annual report and present progress to the Tribal Council. Meet regularly with the Education Director, discuss the reports and issues, answer questions, make recommendations and describe the work needed to implement Council directives.
  • Identify key state and federal education issues that affect tribal students, draft testimony or position statements for the Tribe on such issues, and submit and/or present the testimony or position statements at public hearings or forums on education as directed by the Education Director.
  • Write an Annual Tribal Education Report and present it to the Education Director. Include major sections that present education data as well as analysis and recommendation sections.
  • Work with the Education Committee who are the governing and oversight body for the higher education program. Organize and conduct monthly education committee meetings of student applications and files.
  • Work with the Student Success Specialist with tribal and non-tribal schools and education programs and the governing bodies for these schools and programs, such as state public school boards, in an advocacy role for tribal parents and students, in a liaison role for the tribe.
  • Establish and maintain accurate and complete files and records with education information from schools and education programs.
  • Prepare and present the Tribal Education Department and/or tribal education budgets to the Education Director, manage and monitor spending in relation to the budgets, and work with Education Committee on any needed revisions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Art Degree, in Post-Secondary Education, or Adult Education with experience working with youth, adults and parents.
  • Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must pass local, state, and national background check.
  • Must have a Valid Driver’s License and pass an MVR check.
  • Submit to and pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screening and random testing thereafter.
