Howard University is Hiring a Medical Asst III (Team Lead) Near Washington, DC

The Talent Acquisition department hires qualified candidates to fill positions which contribute to the overall strategic success of Howard University. Hiring staff "for fit" makes significant contributions to Howard University's overall mission.
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, Program Manager, and Practice Office Manager/Supervisor, the CAREWare Data Coordinator is responsible for the entry, aggregation, and maintenance of patient data into the CAREWare system / EMR. Additionally, as a Clinic Assistant, s/he assists physicians in the care and treatment of patients and is responsible for the maintenance of examination rooms, medical/surgical supplies, and equipment.
SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:
As one of the clinic assistants, the position has no responsibility or authority for the direction of others.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
External contacts include a variety of third-party payers, medical organizations, patients, funders, and other healthcare personnel.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Translates and enters patient data from the clinic's EMR and paper Records into the CAREWare database
  • Clean and corrects data entered into the CAREWare database as well as maintains database routinely.
  • Coordinates with other team members patient data to be entered.
  • Assists in locating, filing, maintaining, and organizing records, including both paper records and electronic medical records (EMR.)
  • Confirms and retrieves lab reports, dictations, X-rays, correspondence, and pharmacy information as well as uploads / scans said information into the EMR.
  • Updates and files patients' medical records, handles correspondence, and makes calls as directed by the PI.
  • Reviews patient charts for instructions regarding prescriptions, tests/lab results, follow-up appointments, and/or patient testing procedures.
  • Prepares patients for medical appointments facilitating the following: obtaining and recording patients' vital signs, taking medical history, explaining overall treatment procedures, and prepping patients for examination.
  • Prepares instruments and equipment used in examinations and/or medical / surgical procedures.
  • Assists physicians with medical examinations and procedures.
  • Clean, dress, and remove sutures from wounds as requested by a physician.
  • Observes patients and reports adverse reactions / responses to medication, vaccination, and/or treatment to medical personnel in charge.
  • Collect samples taken from patients for testing, delivers them to the laboratory, and disposes of contaminated samples.
  • Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes materials, instruments, equipment, rooms, and supplies.
  • Schedules patients for follow-up testing procedures.
  • Obtains pre-certification/authorization for surgical procedures, admissions, etc.
  • Provides patient education and instruction as directed by the Physician.
  • Answers telephone, takes messages, and gives routine information according to established procedures.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement activities in the clinic.
  • Maintains knowledge of and complies with established policies and procedures.
  • Maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
CORE COMPETENCIES:
  • Skill in maintaining records, recording test results, and correcting records.
  • Excellent skills in computer usage with proficiency in maintaining records in electronic databases and EMRs
  • Knowledge of medical examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledgeable in the use of CPT and ICD-10 code reference books.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Demonstrated skill in oral and written communications as well as ability to speak clearly.
  • Skill in taking and recording vital signs.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
  • Ability to be detailed-oriented, follow established priorities or procedures, and deliver quality customer service.
  • Ability to use good judgment, make sound decisions, and behave with tact, decorum, and diplomacy.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to read, understand and respond to oral and written instructions.
  • Bilingual ability needed (Spanish.)
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Associate degree in Medical Technology, Medical Assistant, Nursing, or Data Management in a HealthCare Setting. OR three (3) years related experience in a medical office, clinic and/or hospital or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Certification or registration in Medical Technology or as a Medical Assistant is also required with the aforementioned background. Must also have experience with database management and maintenance.
