This position is full-time, Monday-Friday from 7:00 a.m.- 3:30 p.m.
Under the administrative direction of the Director of Women and Infant Services, the Nurse Educator assumes the delegated responsibility for planning, implementing, and evaluating education and training programs for the NICU, designs and implements educational programs to ensure the quality of staff knowledge and skills, functions as an expert in the care and management of patients undergoing perioperative procedures, interfacing with nursing managers, clinical staff, physicians, administration and patients/families. Supervises employees during unit-level orientation and for purposes of education and training.The Nurse Educator in the NICU is responsible for the orientation and education of staff in the NICU. Interacts with staff to determine the educational needs of the assigned team and to plan and coordinate learning opportunities based on needs. Provides staff development expertise as an educator, facilitator, change agent, and leader. Supports the development of nursing staff and fosters empowerment through knowledge to achieve excellence through the delivery of evidence-based nursing practices.Principal Accountabilities and Expectations:

  • Plans and facilitates training or programs that meet the educational needs of the staff, including orientations, in-services, or educational requirements.
  • Develops, plans, implements, and evaluates the Nursing Division orientation program.
  • Coordinates unit-level orientation program along with unit staff.
  • Assesses the learning needs of the staff on the unit annually.
  • Leads, coaches, and council staff with a goal of promoting best practices outcomes.
  • Ensures educational activities are consistent with professional standards, regulatory agencies, institutional and divisional philosophies, policies, and objectives
  • Shares responsibility for the quality and safety of patient care.
  • Participates in councils, committees, and work groups at the unit, department, and hospital levels.
  • Participates in unit, department, and hospital Performance Improvement activities.
  • Prepares annual self-development plan, sets professional goals, and seeks opportunities for achieving them.
Minimum Competencies:
  • Program development and management skills including assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating educational activities that will meet the current learning needs of nurses
  • Ability to assess learning needs, clearly judge and communicate relevant medical information, and deliver engaging presentations.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work well both independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of related medical nursing practice
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Knowledge of measurement and evaluation methodologies in determining educational outcomes and learner proficiency.
  • Assumes duties and responsibilities related and appropriate to the position and area
  • Promotes adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics, Health Science Standards of Conduct, and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
  • Attends all mandatory Compliance Program training, including the HIPAA Privacy training
  • Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements
  • Actively participates in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities
  • Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required; Master’s in Nursing or related field preferred
  • Current Registered Nurse licensure to practice in the District of Columbia
  • BLS certification through the American Heart Association
  • NRP Certification is required.
  • Certification in clinical specialty or nursing professional development within one year of hire.
  • Five (5) years experience in Nursing with two (2) years as a clinical educator or nursing instructor and two (2) years in clinical specialty.
  • Professional organization membership required
