The Zimmer Lab at the University of Virginia studies how complex carbohydrates shape, support and functionalize biological cells and tissues. By using a wide range of molecular and structural biology tools as well as glycobiology and biochemistry, we study the structure & assembly of cell surface polymers that form extracellular architectures. Many organisms extend their surfaces as protective barriers, to mediate cellular interactions, and to confer mechanical strength. Our research focuses on the synthesis and secretion of high molecular weight polysaccharides and their assembly on cell surfaces. In this role, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate closely with one or two postdoctoral fellows to support research projects within the lab and will hold an integral role in support of the science. We are looking for someone who is passionate about conducting research projects and willing to dive in and help out wherever it's needed. Our lab is built on a foundation of mutual trust and knowledge sharing - you'll participate in our weekly lab meetings and journal clubs and will have exposure to all of the work happening in the lab.

• Become knowledgeable about safety protocols and standard operating procedures within the lab.

• Attend and participate in weekly lab meetings - sharing what you're working on and participating in discussions of others' work.

• A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a biological science or closely related field is required.

• Previous hands-on research experience from a source other than lab classes.

• Strong understanding of basic molecular biology techniques.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Fantastic organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills with strong attention to detail.

• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
