Primary Work Address: Snyder Building, #380, Charlottesville, VA, 22903Current HHMI Employees, click here to apply via your Workday account.

The Zimmer Lab at the University of Virginia studies how complex carbohydrates shape, support and functionalize biological cells and tissues. By using a wide range of molecular and structural biology tools as well as glycobiology and biochemistry, we study the structure & assembly of cell surface polymers that form extracellular architectures. Many organisms extend their surfaces as protective barriers, to mediate cellular interactions, and to confer mechanical strength. Our research focuses on the synthesis and secretion of high molecular weight polysaccharides and their assembly on cell surfaces. We study capsule and biofilm formation in bacteria, cell wall biosynthesis in plants, chitin deposition in arthropods, and extracellular matrix formation in vertebrates. About the Role:

In this role, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate closely with one or two postdoctoral fellows to support research projects within the lab and will hold an integral role in support of the science. We are looking for someone who is passionate about conducting research projects and willing to dive in and help out wherever it's needed. Our lab is built on a foundation of mutual trust and knowledge sharing - you'll participate in our weekly lab meetings and journal clubs and will have exposure to all of the work happening in the lab.

What We Provide:
  • A diverse, multidisciplinary team that focuses on a variety of projects across both basic and material science.

  • Excellent mentorship from a hands-on Lab Head and excellent Postdocs who are deeply invested in the success of those in the lab.

  • A collaborative research environment - participation in a group of researchers and labs who came together due to their shared interest in membrane and cellular biophysics.

  • Opportunity to conduct cutting edge mechanistic research on different scales, from single particles to cells.

What You'll Do:
  • Work closely with individual or small groups of researchers to support their research, with the goal of eventually running parts of projects and research.

  • Support general lab activities such as: making solutions and buffers as needed and performing basic molecular cloning (primer design, PCR, DNA/RNA purification), as well as performing protein expression and protein purification and other molecular biology techniques.

  • Become knowledgeable about safety protocols and standard operating procedures within the lab.

  • Attend and participate in weekly lab meetings - sharing what you're working on and participating in discussions of others' work.

What You Bring:
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a biological science or closely related field is required.

  • Previous hands-on research experience from a source other than lab classes.

  • Strong understanding of basic molecular biology techniques.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Fantastic organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills with strong attention to detail.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Proactive, professional, and self-motivated approach to work with an eagerness to learn and grow, and be mentored.

  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a dynamic, diverse, and growing team.

Physical Requirements:
