Assistant Nursery Manager

This position is in Eden, MD.

How Sweet It Is, Inc., is a retail and wholesale nursery, garden center and produce market. We are seeking a full-time nursery assistant manager to learn and help grow what already is the largest retail and wholesale nursery and garden center on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

We provide a one-stop shopping experience for commercial landscapers where they can select all the plants and related goods to complete residential or commercial landscapes. We have the largest selection of trees, evergreens, flowering shrubs, and perennials on the Eastern Shore. In addition, we offer a large selection of stone, statuary, bulk stone and mulch, grass seed, fertilizers, soil conditioners and more.

Your job would be to learn to become the right-hand assistant to the Director of Operations who oversees the entire 51 plus acres of the retail and wholesale nursery. In addition to management skills, the position requires a “hands-on” approach including, but not limited to pulling orders, loading/ unloading trucks, yard logistics and organization.

You will be responsible for and assistant others to accomplish the duties set forth below:

• Direct daily activities of the nursery labor force as it relates to yard layout, product placement, loading, unloading, inventory, organizing, and delivery scheduling.
• Direct the receiving of incoming materials, ensuring quality control checks and accurate counts and inventory controls.
• Maintain receiving records from purchase orders and Daily submission to Office Manager for input into the inventory system.
• Direct proper horticultural care and maintenance of all nursery stock including fertilization and pesticide and herbicide application.
• Direct deployment of Sales and Customer Service personnel to ensure superior customer service throughout all product areas and you are personally involved in providing that customer service.
• Maintain inventory control processes such as spot counts, inventory turn goals, markdowns, scrap reduction to maximize site's effectiveness.
• Contribute to recruiting, training, succession planning of employees.
• Take on the duties and responsibilities of the Manager in their absence and any other duties that may be reasonably assigned.

Successful Candidates should have 3 years’ experience in the following areas:

• Personnel management of landscape installation crews and garden center employees

Managing general operations

• of a horticulture distribution center
• Extensive horticultural knowledge
• Ability to identify plants, pests, and diseases
• Knowledge of installing of stone walkways, walls, and other hardscapes
• Ordering and maintenance of plant material, stone and bulk supplies
• Customer service and sales
• Grounds-keeping
• Landscape maintenance
• Greenhouse management
• The ability to lift at least 50 lbs.

Pay: Pay and benefits are negotiable depending on experience

Schedule:

• Monday to Sunday (5-6 of the days)
• Weekends as needed and Season Summertime
• Year-round work

Education:

• High school or equivalent (Required)
• Prefer some agricultural or horticultural training.

• Greenhouse: 3 years (Required)
• Irrigation: 3 years (Required)

• Hardscape: 3 years (Preferred)

License/Certification:

• Driver's License (Required)
