Job Description:

Reporting to the HFSC general counsel, the Legal Fellow is responsible for supporting the legal department in its efforts to ensure legal compliance in all aspects of HFSC operations. The Legal Fellow will collaborate daily with the general counsel, HFSC forensic sections and administrative departments, supporting the various legal needs of the corporation, with a specific focus on court backlogs, records requests, discovery orders, subpoenas, and managing other legal issues related to managing trial dockets. The Legal Fellow will also serve as a liaison between staff and stakeholders within the court system. Under the guidance of the HFSC general counsel, the Legal Fellow will ensure sound legal advice and counsel is provided to staff members at all levels of the organization. The Legal Fellow will perform professional and administrative legal functions. The position will not have any direct reports. Specific duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

• Ensure legal compliance in all aspects of the mission and organization.
• Assist the general counsel and assistant general counsel in preparing for litigation and administrative hearings relating to records production, discovery, and subpoenas.
• Under the supervision of the general counsel and assistant general counsel, provide legal advice and counsel to HFSC staff members regarding trial court proceedings and post-conviction matters, records requests, court orders for production, discovery, subpoenas, and related matters.
• Prepare legal documents, including, but not limited to briefs, pleadings, motions, memorandums, and opinions on complex legal issues related to trial court proceedings and post-conviction matters, records requests, court orders for production, discovery, subpoenas, and related matters.
• Research legal issues impacting the organization by identifying applicable statutes, rules, and judicial decisions.
• Assist in developing training, educational, and presentation materials for internal and external audiences, as requested.
• At the direction of the general counsel, attend internal and external meetings with staff and/or stakeholders.
• Provide assistance, support and guidance to the Public Information Officer and Client Services and Case Management Division in completing required production or destruction of records.
• Other duties as assigned.
