At Houston Methodist the Student ProfessionalNurse (SPN) position is part of the Methodist Advancement intoProfessional Practice (MAPP) program which provides students withopportunities to follow a nursing preceptor in support of buildingclinical competency and confidence in transition from student roleto new graduate nurse.

This position is accountable and responsiblefor nursing care administered under the direction of a RegisteredNurse. This position demonstrates clinical knowledge and skills tocarry out delegated tasks for agespecific populations described inthe unit(s) scope of service.

The SPN position demonstratesappropriate communication skills and interpersonal relationships.This position practices Patient Family Centered Care in concertwith Houston Methodist ICARE values : Integrity CompassionAccountability Respect andExcellence.

Participates innursing care conferences and discharge planning with the patientfamily and other members of the health care team.

e. licensed nurse ormanagement policy and procedure manuals or other references onstandards of care

Deliverscare in a kind courteous and honest manner. Identifies andcommunicates patient problems / needs and nursing interventionsperformed to the Registered Nurse assigned.

Reinforces health careinformation / teaching provided by the Registered Nurse to thepatient and family.

Rolemodels the patient and familycentered care standards and providesdirect patient care under the direction of a registered nurse.

Responds to the call light system contacting nursing personnel asappropriate and follows through with meeting patient needs.

Usespeertopeer accountability towards improving department score forpatient satisfaction on unitbased scorecard i.e. bedside shifthandoff / report.

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performsdirect patient care treatments and procedures in accordance withestablished policies and standards of the hospital as outlined inthe plan of care.

Legally documents where applicable delegatedobservations and interventions care administered in accordance withestablished policies andprocedures.

Accuratelyreports observations conditions and problems of patients tolicensed personnel to achieve desired patient outcomes.

Acts aspatient advocate by preserving the privacy of patients and familieskeeping the safety of the patient inmind.

Rounds to ensurepatient needs are met (four Ps). Supports initiatives to preventconditions such as pressure ulcers patient falls andhospitalacquired infections.

Reports near misses and collaborateswith the interprofessional health care team to improve patientsafety.

Contributes toidentification of corrective action and improvement activitiesimpacting quality and safety targets on the unitbased scorecardthrough peertopeer accountability reporting near misses andcollaborating with the interprofessionalteam.

FINANCE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Acts as a goodsteward of resources by ensuring the best use of equipment andmaterials. Selfmotivated to independently manage time effectivelyand prioritize daily tasks minimizing incidental overtime.

EDUCATION

  • HighSchool diploma or equivalent education (examples include : GEDverification of homeschool equivalency partial or full completionof postsecondary educationetc.)
  • Enrolled in a schoolof nursing program maintaining a minimum 3.2GPA

WORKEXPERIENCE

Successfullycompleted at least one clinicalrotation

LICENSES ANDCERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

BLSBasic Life Support (AHA)

  • Demonstratesthe skills and competencies necessary to safely perform theassigned job determined through ongoing skills competencyassessments and performanceevaluations
  • Sufficientproficiency in speaking reading and writing the English languagenecessary to perform the essential functions of this job especiallywith regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety orsecurity
  • Ability toeffectively communicate with patients physicians family members andcoworkers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus andapplication of positive languageprinciples
  • Performs basicpatient care activities of daily living (ADLs) within unit specificdefined limits and job scope such as assistance with patientelimination hygiene comfort safety nutrition and progressactivity
