Starting Pay Range from $47,642 to $53,669 a year

The General Ledger Accountant is responsible to participate in maintaining all aspects of HK’s general ledger, including the timeliness and accuracy of data entry, account reconciliations. This position will participate in the preparation and analysis of financial reports as well as the preparation of required financial compliance and disclosure reporting. Responsible to analyze journal entries, supporting documentation and affected accounts and work with property accountants to ensure validity. Incumbent has overall responsibility of ensuring the accuracy of financial transactions entered into the accounting system, including ensuring accurate and timely monthly close, billings, collections and cash applications. All while maintaining an environment with strong internal controls.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, including:
    • reviewing account balances for accuracy and, where necessary, preparing correcting journal entries with supporting documentation;
    • preparing and posting monthly departmental indirect allocations, pre-paid expense amortization, depreciation, and interest accruals
    • Assists in maintaining accurate debt and fixed asset schedules including updating for purchases and disposals and related depreciation
    • Complete monthly management fee calculations and Interfund transfers
    • Conduct annual Petty Cash audits and biennial inventory
    • Conduct weekly certifications prior to check releases.
    • recommending new GL accounts and recognize inactivate or delete obsolete accounts as appropriate .
  • Prepare and post month-end close and accounting transactions in a timely and accurate manner
  • Assists Finance Manager with general ledger monthly and yearly closes, including preparation of the required reconciliations and schedules for the annual audit.
  • Assists Finance Manager with cash flow and cash requirement assessments.
  • Participates in budget development
  • Reviews and uploads entries from subsidiary ledgers to the general ledger. Reviews and reconciles accounts receivable subsidiary ledgers to general ledger
  • Reviews and reconciles subsidy requests to various funding agency to assure expected revenues are received.
  • Assists staff in understanding financial reports.
  • Monitors timely posting of deposits by property managers and accountants.
  • Reviews and posts entries for timely posting of non-resident deposits prepared by property accountant.
  • Manages compliance with and reporting for unclaimed property.
  • Participates in preparation of audit schedules and, as requested, Interacts with external auditors to ensure financial statements are presented accurately and filed on time.
  • Keep abreast of regulatory requirements and best practices in accounting.
  • Assists other Accounting and Finance staff when needed.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with internal and external customers in a professional and positive manner.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality standards.
  • Ability to learn the departments and organizations structure, procedures, regulations and requirements as they relate to the functions of the position.
  • Must be adept at handling multiple tasks and responsibilities; have the ability to effectively change priorities quickly and to work cooperatively and proactively with department members to accomplish goals.
  • Excellent problem solving, analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Superior knowledge of manual and automated accounting systems and processes.
  • Ability to solve complex technical accounting problems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, State Examiners, and other officials.
  • Ability to interpret and comply with established Local, State, and Federal accounting procedures and systems.
  • Ability to organize and establish priorities for work and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and accurately with attention to detail and exercise of sound judgment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Accounting or Finance, or related field preferred; or equivalent combination of education training and experience.
  • 2 years’ experience of General Ledger and Journal Entries experience
  • Must have intermediate-advanced level Excel skills
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to resolve complex problems with multiple variables
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail showing the ability to meet deadlines
  • Proven track record of maintaining strong internal controls and reliable and efficient processes
  • E xcellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Solid GAAP and financial reporting technical skills
  • Special Qualificat ions
  • Ability to pass criminal background check.
  • Previous Housing Authority experience a plus.
