Position Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to provide housekeeping and laundry services, meal preparation, medication assistance, reminders, and personal care daily to older adults, aged 62 and above. Collaborates with management to ensure residents receive the best quality of life possible. The services provided prevent premature institutionalization and enhance the quality and quantity of life.

All activities must support the Housing Authority of Baltimore City (“HABC” or “Authority”) mission, strategic goals, and objectives.

Major Duties

  • Ensures that the residents’ living quarters are safe and well-organized. Provides housekeeping and cleaning tasks in a resident’s domicile. Vacuums rooms (floors and carpets) and wipes up spills and grime. Mops and sweeps floors. Picks up debris, discards items as appropriate, and organizes items.
  • Addresses, removes, or otherwise adjudicates all safety hazards.
  • Dusts and wipes furniture and countertops, ensuring dust, grime, food, and spills are removed and deposited in rubbish cans.
  • Helping chronically ill, disabled and less independent residents with activities of daily living such as bathing, using the toilet, grooming, eating, dressing, and washing.
  • Reminds residents of pending prescribed medication needs. Ensures prescribed medication is taken on the proper day and at the proper time, with/without food, as prescribed. Counts pills or measures liquids. Distributes medication to residents, as needed. Ensures medications are re-filled as needed.
  • Provides laundry services to residents. Washes and dries soiled/worn clothing. Folds clean clothing and puts clothing away in the proper drawer/cupboard.
  • Prepares daily meals, as needed, making soups, sandwiches, or finger foods, cutting fruits and vegetables into small pieces, and preparing cheeses and meats. Prepares healthy, and aesthetically appealing cooked meals, as needed. Ensures residents receive a healthy and balanced diet, with a variety of choices, and ensures the resident has an opportunity to eat, with assistance, as needed. Ensures the resident is appropriately hydrated. Prepare snacks and meals to be available to the resident when the Aide is not working.
  • Provides companionship to residents and establishes a trusting relationship with them. Interacts intellectually with residents in an empathetic, kind, and compassionate manner, taking part in conversations, reading books, watching television, listening to the radio, or engaging in crafts or projects to prevent cognitive decline, as much as possible.
  • Monitors resident’s physical and mental health, notifying supervisor when changes are observed. Notifies supervisor about concerns in the resident’s overall condition.
  • Performs any reasonable requests that the resident asks for.
  • Provides daily documentation of all services provided, and identifies any concerns, behavior changes, or medical issues.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education, Training and/or Experience

High School Diploma or a GED and a minimum of 1 year of experience providing housekeeping and/or compassionate personal assistance to elderly people. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Maryland driver's license. 
  • Must be able to be covered under the Authority's fidelity bond. 
  • Must be able to be covered under the Authority's vehicle insurance policy.

Other Requirements

  • You must successfully pass a prescreening investigation, including employment and education verification, drug screening, and a physical examination.
  • Probationary Period: This is a full-time permanent position. Upon employment, you will be required to serve a 6-month probationary period.
  • All new employees are required to receive at least one COVID-19 vaccination shot in a two-shot series or be fully vaccinated prior to the date of hire.
