Housed Working and Healthy is Hiring a Baker and Culinary Instructor (16-25hrs/week - no weekends) Near Denver, CO

Housed Working and Healthy has an immediate opening for a Baker/Culinary Instructor. Are you passionate and excited to make positive change in our community, and take us and yourself to the next level? We offer a close working relationship with the Executive Chef, staff and participants, and the opportunity to impact and work broadly across the organization. This is an ideal position for the person that has initiative, leadership, flexibility, is fast paced, and likes to make things happen.

Position Summary:

Deliver and help improve all culinary aspects of our Culinary Arts Workforce Training Program. We work with local agencies that refer clients (individuals experiencing homelessness) to our free culinary training program. Our curriculum is delivered in our commercial kitchen in SW Denver. The program is 3-4 months, with the goal that all participants are placed in employment by the time they graduate.

This position reports to the Executive Chef, and together with other instructors manages a class size of 15 to 25 students.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and deliver the baking curriculum.
  • Help implement all aspects of the kitchen and food service operations, including weekly promotional activities for our Outreach staff, sales to the public including developing new products, special events, fundraisers and celebrations.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Chef, develop and create menus that are engaging and keep students interested and motivated, while also providing appropriate learning experiences for our students so they are prepared to gain employment.
  • Manage and maintain the daily schedule, and a professional working environment.
  • Culinary arts instruction, administering the ServSafe training program, teaching job readiness skills, and coordinating guest chefs.
  • Conduct hands-on culinary instruction of students using existing curriculum and develop new curriculum as needs change.
  • Lead students in preparation of healthy meals and products. The Chef Instructor will need to balance the twin goals of providing an effective job training experience while also ensuring a high-quality, food safety-compliant meals for consumption onsite and also for sale in the community.
  • Administer written and practical tests. Document and report each student’s ability to comprehend, perform, and retain practical techniques. Work one-on-one with students to ensure comprehension of lessons and information.
  • Monitor and report on student progress throughout the training program. In addition, the Chef Instructor will support students during the job search period.
  • Work in close collaboration with Case Managers and other staff who oversee the student services, soft-skills training, job placement and recruitment of students to fulfill the overall mission. This must be done in a safe, respectful, professional and team oriented manner where all departments are treated equally and with professional respect.
  • Working with other staff, de-escalate situations with students.
  • Train, supervise, and mentor kitchen staff to maintain high standards of performance, including managing hours.
  • Manage the food and supplies budget, staff, maintain inventory
  • Work with a cooperative attitude, wear many hats, take initiative and have a can-do attitude.
  • Maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment
  • Adhere to all food safety and sanitation regulations

Qualifications:

Education: Culinary Arts degree and/or Associates Degree with culinary or hospitality focus (preferred). ServSafe Certified.

Experience: Experience as an instructor with a culinary program preferred. 4 years of relevant industry experience at a chef level or higher, with related management experience. Experience in fine dining as well as a large scale production facility or institutional food service setting preferred. A high degree of technical ability to relay information in a manner that provides a positive learning experience and instills a passion for the profession. Administrative and technology skills adequate to build course materials. Ability to demonstrate concern and sensitivity toward culinary trainees and their individual needs and learning styles.

Other: Must possess own transportation, have a good driving record, maintain a valid driver’s license and provide proof of insurance coverage that meets agency coverage standards; possess basic computer skills and be able to work virtually. Ability to speak Spanish is a plus.

Schedule: Tuesday - Friday 8:30 am - 12:30 pm (16-25 hours, No Weekends)

Compensation

The position will have a pay range of $24-26/hour based on experience, fit, and capability. This position includes a comprehensive benefits package.
