Hour Children is Hiring a Visiting Service Specialist Near Astoria, NY

Reports to: Program Director

Status: Full-time

Work Schedule: M-F, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, some evenings and weekends required

Salary: $45,000-50,000

Job Summary

The visiting service specialist will provide visiting support to justice-involved women detained at Rose M. Singer Center and their families under the supervision of the Director of the Visiting and Family Assistance Program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Act as a liaison with families, support systems, and foster care agencies to schedule televisits and in-person visits; Act as a liaison with DOC to schedule the priority televisits
  • Coordinate transportation services for families for visits to Rikers Island
  • In the visiting room, offer children and families a safe place to play, learn, bond, and implement activities to further enhance family visits and interaction
  • Design appropriate programming and activities for women and their visiting family members, including children of varying ages
  • Enhance family-focused programming during visits to enhance the bond between parent and child
  • Collaborate with the Program Director to coordinate upcoming visits and special events
  • Maintain appropriate client information and documentation in electronic databases and hard files, and submit accurate data on regular basis
  • Attend internal staff meetings, trainings, and supervision, as well as related external meetings and trainings with resource partners
  • Comply with all jail procedures, processes and requirements including all security regulations and PREA requirements
  • Perform additional department or agency related duties or special projects as directed by supervisor

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Associate degree required; bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Spanish language fluency is required
  • At least one year of direct practice experience working with individuals and families impacted by incarceration, criminal justice, foster care or family court involvement
  • Successful completion of background investigation by DOC as part of volunteer application process
  • A demonstrated commitment to parents’ rights and social justice
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have the ability to provide effective services and produce accurate written documents in a timely fashion
  • Must be able to work with people from diverse backgrounds in a culturally- inclusive manner
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of team
  • Must be able to have solid, productive boundaries and work cooperatively with DOC and uniformed staff
  • Computer and technical skills, specifically Microsoft Office programs

Pay: $45,000.00 - $50,000.00 per year
