PERIOPERATIVE SERVICES REGISTERED NURSE

GENERAL:

In accordance with the Hot Springs County Hospital District Personnel Policy and Procedure Manual and the requirements of our accrediting bodies, the employee will: support the mission “Partnering with our community for quality health and healing”, the five core values “Ownership, Always better than yesterday, Service first, Integrity, and Stewardship of our resources (OASIS). ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Able to establish the patients expected outcomes based on nursing diagnosis and implement patient care interventions according to plan of care. Evaluate the attainment of expected outcomes and effectiveness of patient care. Participate in patient and family teaching
  2. Calls patients day before surgery to confirm appointment and with specific instructions for NPO status, prep completion and where to report. Provide patient education in all areas of responsibility. Able to function and participate in PAT process.
  3. Prepares patient for surgery and outpatient procedures as directed by physician’s orders and administering nursing care to patients pre/intra/post procedure. Prepare the patients for discharge post procedure, including follow-up care or referral.
  4.  Able to perform minor procedures dealing with aseptic techniques. Organizes and pulls cases according to preference cards. Provide equipment and supplies based on patient needs. Performs sponge, sharps and instrument counts according to policy and procedure.
  5. Function and assist with responsibilities in OR, PACU, Endoscopy and Ambulatory to level of expertise. Prepares specimens for mail out according to HSCHD policy and procedure. Functions appropriately in trauma situations, understands the role.
  6. Physiologically monitor patient during procedure and throughout the perioperative experience.
  7. Prepare charts accurately. Documents nursing care in a timely and accurate manner. Stocks and orders supplies.
  8. Plans, supports and coordinates activities and resources to assure pain in all patients is recognized and addressed appropriately. Serves as a patient advocate.
  9. Administration of all medications (I.V., PO, SQ, etc.) and biologicals in accordance to State Law. Remain current on conscious sedation procedures and able to function in this role under direct supervision of a physician or CRNA.
  10. Chemo/Bio infusion specific nurses demonstrate ability to provide appropriate therapy and maintain appropriate certification and credentials.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

The Registered Nurse shall:

1. Current Wyoming Registered Nurse license in good standing

2. One or two years’ experience in surgery preferred. Able to function in a circulating role, recovery room, endoscopy, minimal scrubbing and in central sterile.

3. Must possess communication skills to relate to the public in person

4. Demonstrate good organizational abilities

5. Seeks proficiencies in computer applications, e.g. word processing, spread sheets, database, presentation, and project publication.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret appropriate journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write policies and procedures that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and is knowledgeable in metric and apothecary.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to modify care based on the developmental / functional age of the patient as well as that of the patient's ethnic background.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • BLS, ACLS, PALS (obtain ACLS and PALS within one year of employment)
  • TNCC preferred but not required
  • CNOR preferred but not required

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to interact with patients, families, visitors and co-workers. Ability to interact assertively and tactfully when dealing with conflict and in group solving activities. Ability to demonstrate a professional, open minded approach in identifying problems and resolving problems/conflicts.

AGE SPECIFIC:

Must be able to provide care according to the developmental level and or chronological patient served. This includes, but is not limited to, identifying the needs and abilities of each patient, and demonstrating an understanding of how a patient’s chronological and developmental age influences his/her need for adaptations related to his/her abilities. Also, an understanding of how a patient’s age impacts his/her ability to deal with and adapt to the care needed/provided is required. General census of neonatal to geriatric patients
