Description

Overall Responsibility:

Inputs charges for patients as documented by clinical personnel. Codes procedures by approved codes and procedures.

Key tasks and responsibilities (essential functions):

  • Codes procedures by approved ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS Level II procedure codes according to physician dictation, utilizing operative and medical reports.
  • Acts as a key resource for physicians, providers and staff regarding coding questions.
  • Maintains diagnostic code files which includes identifying inappropriate codes and informing medical staff of all updates.
  • Strong communication with physicians to discuss inquiries as it pertains to coding and getting maximum re-imbursement for procedures performed.
  • Consistently communicates with collectors researching denial trends, investigating re-imbursement from identical codes and investigates instances of low re-imbursements and assisting in appeal processes.
  • Completes work in a timely manner to meet the departmental deadlines.
  • Works closely with Business Office Manager in making recommendations for performance improvement activities using outcome measurements to assess and improve the current processes.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient information.
  • Adheres to all company policies and procedures and maintains working knowledge of all clinical and governmental/federal standards.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate tools, techniques, resources, and/or systems to achieve maximum results.

Licensure and Certification: Medical Coding Certification strongly preferred.

Education/Experience: High School Graduate or equivalent. Minimum of 1 year with comparable job skills preferred. Medical Terminology preferred.

Environmental and physical requirements - Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate appropriate reports. Requires communication skills to deal well with employees, patients, families, physicians and vendors. May require lifting of 20-30 pounds maximum, potential for exposure to blood and body fluids (minimal), and exposure to infectious disease.
