Job Preview

The Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC)/Assistant Manager of Sports Medicine will provide support to physicians and clinic staff within HMC specialty clinics and sports medicine. ATC responsibilities include the prevention of athletic injuries; the maintenance of the health and well-being; and the recuperation and rehabilitation following illness, injury, or surgery of all athletes, as well as all the responsibilities mentioned under the Illinois Athletic Trainers Practice Act. The Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC)/Assistant Manager of Sports Medicine Assists with ATC scheduling and oversight of the Sports Medicine Department.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates creativity, skill, and efficiency in evaluating and providing patient treatment programs within departmental guidelines and state practice act guidelines.
  • Assistance with the coordination of orthopedic, and podiatry specialty clinics, which will include, scheduling, directed patient care as an ATC, patient intakes and rooming, chart documentation.
  • PRN ATC event coverage with the sports medicine program
  • Communicating with athletes, parents, athletic directors, coaches, and physicians regarding athletes' playing status and ability to return to competition.
  • Communicating with physical therapists and physicians regarding patients' conditions. All communication must be conducted with HIPAA policies and procedures compliance.
  • Uses layman terms and provides written information, when appropriate, when giving patient education to the patient and/or their families.
  • Demonstrates competence in department specific tasks (modalities).
  • Assists with outreach coverage to local high schools, including public relation duties.
  • Evaluation, recognition, prevention, and rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries, in regard to all athletic industrial rehabilitation patients.
  • Works as the athletic trainer at contracted schools toensure coverage of home events and quality patient care.
  • Assist in running the orthopedic physician clinic.
  • Provides medical coverage at outside games, practices, and/or tournaments as needed.
  • Communicates daily with Physical Therapist and/or Clinic Director as to any changes in patient's status, treatment progression, and to reassessment and discharge dates.
  • Completes annual TB testing and maintains current CPR/First Aide and Athletic Training certification.
  • Complies with all policies regarding employment as outlined in the employee handbook.
  • Maintains and ensures renewal of Sports Medicine contracts with area schools.
  • Coordinates marketing to the community as well as physician groups to garner maximum market share of sports medicine and orthopedic patients.
  • Develop strategic plans for continuation of the service line and delivery of services in the community.
  • Manages supplies and obtains new supplies as needed to provide school athletic training
  • Communicates/coordinates needs with the appropriate school Athletic Directors regarding school sports coverage/programs.
  • Updates and maintain applicable policies and procedures for Sports Medicine
  • Participates in State, District and National Athletic Training Organizations as appropriate.
  • Oversees the Hopedale Medical Complex Student Athlete of the Month.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide personal and professional customer service to the age and medical condition of the patients/members served in the Wellness Center/Rehabilitation Department. This requires that the incumbent demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development as well as the physical, emotional, and psycho-social needs of the patient/member population served.
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, personal fitness training programs, techniques and modalities at a level normally acquired through completion of a bachelor's , or entry level master's degree in Athletic Training.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to operate a computer. Ability to type 35 to 40wpm, knowledge of Microsoft Word, and Excel.
  • Work requires a high level of professionalism and confidentiality to work with members, patients, or residents.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and harmoniously with people of all age levels in enthusiastic matter.
  • Holds current CPR/AED certification or willing to obtain certification.
  • NATA BOC certification and IL AT license or eligible.

Physical Demands

  • Work requires ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds on a daily basis.
  • Work requires ability to stand, walk, and kneel for 90% of work time.
  • Works requires ability to stoop and bend, reach, and grab with arms and hands, have manual dexterity, ability to communicate with others, and color vision.
  • Work requires ability to push and/or pull supply carts, gurneys, and/or wheelchairs.
  • Work requires ability to lift and position patients.
  • Work requires proofreading and checking documents for accuracy on a daily basis.
  • Work requires ability to read and manipulate all equipment dials/controls.

Working Conditions

  • Works in all athletic type atmospheres where there may be discomforts due to dust, dirt, noise, heat and the like.
  • Works in patient care area where there is exposure to infectious disease, although potential for personal harm or bodily injury is limited when employee follows all safety procedures and uses appropriate safety equipment, and universal precautions.
  • All HMC employees are required to pass a Federal and State background check, and pass a drug and alcohol test. We test for illegal and legal substances, including marijuana.
