Position: Community Based Public Educator

HOPE of East Central Illinois is dedicated to ending domestic violence by providing a wide range of services for victims and facilitating social change. We are currently seeking to fill a Full-Time, Community Based Public Educator role within our Charleston office. Job Description:

Exempt. Full-time position, 40 hours per week. The Public Educator role may require some evenings and flexible hours. This position is responsible for increased community awareness of domestic violence and promotion of prevention, education, identification and intervention services available to victims within the HOPE of East Central Illinois catchment area. This role reports to the Director of Outreach and Prevention.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assists with curriculum development efforts, including developing new activities, designing handouts/flyers and updating and improving community presentations
  2. Assists with developing the nutrition and education programs
  3. Coordinates efforts to engage the community in strategies to increase awareness, prevention, education, identification and intervention on issues related to domestic violence
  4. Collaborates with community partners to present and address the unique needs of survivors
  5. Assists in the delivery of the agency’s outreach and community education plan
  6. Assists in documentation to track the success of the agency’s outreach and community education plan
  7. Assists with presenting information to the public on topics related to the effects of the pandemic on survivors
  8. Provides transportation for survivor
  9. Provides child care when needed
  10. Participates in the agency's on call rotation
  11. Assists with fundraisers
  12. Completes office duties such as filing, answering phones, and greeting the public
  13. Other duties assigned

Position Requirements:

Education /Certification

  • Valid Driver’s License and Auto Insurance - Required
  • Bachelor’s Degree - Required
  • 40-Hour Training in Domestic Violence - Will be provided
  • Successful completion of a background check - Required

Experience

  • 1-3 Years of Job Related Experience - Required
  • Experience working with Victims of Domestic Violence - Preferred

Abilities

  • Sitting or prolonged standing - Required
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 30 pounds - Required
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills - Required
  • Ability to read and understand written information - Required
  • Competency recognizing and responding effectively to survivors who are evidencing trauma responses - Required
  • Must be a team player - Required
  • Ability to communicate with and empower others - Required
  • Commitment to non-violence within families and homes - Required

Scope of the Position:

The Community Based Public Educator role is a full-time, exempt position. Some evenings and flexible hours are needed. This role is responsible for increased community awareness of issues related to domestic violence and the services that HOPE of East Central Illinois provides. Responsibilities include promoting HOPE's efforts in prevention and education. The role will provide assistance to the community by educating the public in the identification of domestic violence. The role will also educate the community in the promotion of HOPE's prevention and intervention services that are available to survivors within the agency's catchment area. The ideal candidate must be willing to engage in direct communication in an effort to contribute to a healthy and positive community and work culture. Candidates must also be committed to and comfortable with diversity and demonstrate commitment to inclusivity. Successful candidates must be able to communicate and work effectively with diverse populations and must be able to work effectively as an individual as well as a team member.
