Job Location: Members of this team are permitted to work from home up to 90% of the time. While this equates to a minimum of 24-25 days in the office each year, determining which days a physical presence on campus is required will vary based on the academic calendar and the community’s needs

Job Description
The Director of Sponsored Research is the institutional grants officer and authorized
official for submission of all employee-driven federal, state, and private grants. This position serves as the pre-award and (non-financial) post-award administrator for external grants, federal compliance officer, and institutional liaison with funding agencies. The position
also assists employees in developing grant budgets and proposals, serves as an internal liaison on grant-related matters, develops policies and processes for grant submission and administration, and maintains institutional data on grant funding. The Director of Sponsored Research reports to the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs.
Major Responsibilities
  • Oversees all operations and personnel within the Office of Sponsored Research
  • Work with the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs, academic deans, and department chairs to establish a five-year strategic plan to define a vision for the future and identify the OSRP’s goals and objectives
  • Serves as an Authorized Organizational Representative (AOR) to submit proposals and to accept and approve grants, sub-awards, agreements, amendments, and contracts as the College’s authorized signing official
  • Guides and assists employees and administration in identifying appropriate funding sources
  • Has one-on-one consultations with faculty to gain familiarity with their scholarly interests and external funding needs
  • Serves as a faculty mentor in the process of grant writing
  • Assists with development and approves final proposed budgets, assuring they meet institutional requirements
  • Reviews and approves external grant proposals
  • Maintains a grants management information system used in preparing administrative reports and grant archives
  • Consults with senior administrators regarding all grant activity requiring institutional resources
  • Serves as a post-award liaison between the grant recipient and funding agency
  • Collaborates and/or coordinates institutional grant efforts with Business Services and Philanthropy and Engagement when appropriate
  • Maintains familiarity with and knowledge of program solicitations, federal regulations, and compliance requirements related to grants and apprises relevant parties of new or revised requirements
  • Assures the institution is registered and in compliance with receiving federal funding
  • Manages the subcontracting process with Hope’s collaborating institutions
  • Maintains membership with and attends sponsored research organizational meetings with CLASP, SRA, and ICO for continued education
  • Works with assistant directors to develop and deliver training workshops on proposal development to faculty and staff
  • Oversees the Office of Sponsored Research website
  • Serves on institutional committees as appropriate
  • Prepares quarterly reports for the Office of the Provost to be presented to the Board of Trustees
Qualifications
Qualifications
  • A minimum of three years experience in grants or research administration at a university, private research institution, hospital system, non-profit agency, or government agency is desirable
  • NIH and NSF experience is highly desirable
  • Proficiency with electronic research administration systems (grants.gov, NSF, Fastlane, etc.)
  • Excellent organizational and management skills, ability to deal with multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel and Word) and Google Suite, and willing to learn other computer skills and local software programs (i.e., Banner, PeopleAdmin) as necessary
  • Skilled at budgeting and competent to manage and report financial records
  • Skilled in internal and external reporting
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; someone who is a “connector”
  • Ability to lead and work with a team, problem solve, tolerate ambiguity, and handle varying workloads
  • Skilled in networking, active in a formal or informal community of grants professionals
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
Physical Demands
This position requires remaining in a sitting or standing position for frequent periods of time; uses office machinery such as a computers, printers, copy machines; Occasionally involves moving items over 10 pounds; frequently will move between different offices/workspaces/buildings; and requires effective communication abilities.
