Job Description
The primary role of the Studio Technician is safety, instruction in that safety, and technical support for faculty and students. The Studio Tech will serve as the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) coordinator for all studios, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, ceramics, drawing, and the design lab. This is a .75 position benefits-eligible position: 40 hours/week, 9 months (3 months off mostly June –mid-August); Time off is established in consultation with HR and the chairperson at the beginning of the academic year. Usually, four, 2-3 week blocks in December, June, and/or July. Performance will be reviewed annually. Support of Hope College’s mission is required. The studio tech reports to the Chair of the Department of Art and Art History for studio and curriculum, and to Dean of Arts and Humanities for facility health and safety.
DESCRIPTION:
The Studio Technician/Lab Supervisor will serve as the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) coordinator for all studios, which includes painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography and the design lab. The Studio Technician serves as the department’s liaison to Hope College’s Health and Safety Office.
This position addresses the following needs:
  • Implementation and maintenance of healthy and safe studio work environments.
  • Management and administration of all studio operations and DePree Art Center building issues.
  • Maintenance and supply inventory and Global Harmonizing Systems (GHS) reports.
  • NASAD accreditation requirements.
  • Provide technical support to faculty and students.
Required duties:
  • Manage the studio facilities and provide oversight for safety and health monitoring in coordination with Hope’s Health & Safety Officer and the Physical Plant
  • Implement and maintain safety protocols for the curriculum
  • Work with the Health & Safety Office to maintain compliance with various regulations and guidelines
  • Maintain, model, and enforce safe studio practices for students, faculty, and staff
  • Provide technical support for faculty and students, specifically in independent studio projects (ART 365), senior studio class (ART 350), and to students working on projects or assignments requiring studio access, assistance or supervision (sculpture power tools, photography darkroom, ceramic glaze area, and kilns, Mac-lab, and printmaking acid room)
  • Supervise student training on equipment that includes higher safety risk
  • Assist ceramics studio with firing and kiln maintenance
  • Hold weekly open hours (7-10 per week) in the sculpture studio
  • Hold weekend open hours at least once a month and at least one weekday night per week
  • Hire, schedule, train, and supervise student studio and teaching assistants
  • Provide a schedule to faculty and students, in writing, at the beginning of each semester for open hours and student technical support hours (for areas outside of sculpture).
  • Maintain curricular and studio safety manuals, as needed
  • Proactively communicate with faculty to assess studio and building needs
  • Work with department chair on determining summer maintenance work and repairs
  • Coordinate with faculty pre-recorded and in-class safety tutorials for classes requiring use of equipment and tools
  • Maintain student DePree Rules and Regulations acknowledgement contracts
  • Assist faculty with ordering supplies and equipment for studio classes
  • Contribute to a robust and student-centered community environment within the department
  • Attend weekly faculty meetings at chair’s discretion
  • Conduct a digital documentation workshop each semester open to all students enrolled in studio courses
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or BFA degree required.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience working in an academic/professional studio environment.
  • Experience in a studio art environment is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • Collaborative approach; open to working with and receiving feedback from department faculty
  • Ability to train and manage student workers.
Physical Demands
This position requires remaining in a sitting or standing position for frequent periods of time; uses office machinery such as a computers, printers, copy machines; Occasionally involves moving items over 10 pounds; frequently will move between different offices/workspaces/buildings; and requires effective communication abilities.
