Hood River County SD is Hiring a Temporary Music Teacher 1.0 FTE- Hood River Middle School Near Hood River, OR

This posting will remain open until filled. This is a full time temporary position at Hood River Middle School. We anticipate this assignment lasting until the end of the 2021/22 school year.

Job Purpose Statements: The job of “Music Teacher” is done for the purpose of developing students’ music appreciation and skills through implementing District approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; developing lesson plans; addressing specific educational needs of students; providing a safe and optimal learning environment and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

Hood River Middle School is looking for a passionate, inspired, and student-centered music educator committed to program excellence. Our music program is very strong and well-supported by our community. It is housed in a stunning, four-year old band room, with practice rooms. 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assesses student’s musical skills for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding students’ progress, expectations, goals, etc.
  • Collaborates with school personnel, parents and various community agencies for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes, developing solutions and planning curriculum.
  • Demonstrates methods required to perform assignments and/or skills for the purpose of modeling the skills necessary to perform the tasks safely and/or accurately.
  • Instructs students for the purpose of improving their music appreciation and musical skills (e.g. voice and instrumentation).
  • Maintains musical instruments, equipment and supplies for the purpose of ensuring availability of required materials.
  • Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and an optimal learning environment.
  • Plans concerts and recitals for the purpose of displaying student performances.
  • Prepares teaching materials and reports (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and providing documentation of teacher and student progress.
  • Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, district and/or school policies.
  • Supports classroom teachers and other school personnel for the purpose of assisting them with classroom music programs.
  • Other Job Functions:
  • Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of supporting teacher’s expectations, developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Participates in various meetings (e.g. parent conferences, in-service training, site meetings, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information and/or meeting credential requirements.
  • Maintains predictable and consistent attendance to meet the requirements of the position. 
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements - Qualifications:

• Experience Required: Prior experience as a music teacher (instrumental and vocal), preferably at the middle school level.

Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:

Skills to motivate students in one or more areas of music, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, evaluate performance.

Knowledge of curriculum, education code, district policies, musical instruction and instrumentation. 

Abilities to stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform a variety of specialized and responsible tasks, maintain records, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, other school personnel, meet attendance, schedule and other deadlines. Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/accommodation/ field of vision.

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:

  • Valid Oregon Teaching license with Music endorsement
  • Valid Driver's license.
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Pass a District, pre-employment, post-offer drug screen.
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

The successful applicant will need to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug screen and nationwide criminal background check, if not a current district employee.
