Honeywell Performance Materials is a global leader in developing and manufacturing advanced materials, process technologies and automation solutions. PMT’s Advanced Materials businesses manufacture a wide variety of high performance products, including fluorocarbons, hydrofluoroolefins, caprolactam, resins, ammonium sulfate fertilizer, phenol, specialty films, waxes, additives, advanced fibers, customized research chemicals and intermediates, and electronic materials and chemicals.
The Lead Optical Engineer will be responsible for optical sensor design, system engineering, luminescent materials detection, and application testing of optoelectronic sensors for Authentication Technologies programs for the Fine Chemicals business. Position will be located in Ft Washington, PA.
Authentication Technologies (AT) is part of the Fine Chemicals business unit, and is a leader in the development of Authentication solutions for banknotes, coins, high-value documents, and materials packaging. 
This is an opportunity for an engineer who will pursue applied research and develop products in the areas of optical detection systems, luminescent materials science, and product authentication. The areas of research, development, and applications include luminescent materials and spectroscopy, optical systems, systems engineering, LEDs/lasers, optical systems design, ray tracing, optical detection, data processing, and product authentication (anti-counterfeiting of currency, documents, stamps, consumer goods). 
This engineer will be expected work on a team to lead and develop new concepts, develop intellectual property, write project proposals, assess competitive technologies and products, and develop new technologies for future products. This will include understanding customer requirements, translating those into device and product requirements, performing trade studies, writing research and development proposals, project cost estimating, budgeting, and program management. The engineer must be technically creative, have strong organizational and communication skills, program management experience, and able to work in a collaborative environment. 
Responsibilities:
• Lead optical designs, detection, and systems engineering in a highly-dynamic team environment with strong customer focus
• Analytical capability to design optical systems using optical ray tracing / simulation tools
• Perform optical measurements of material samples in laboratory environment and maintain equipment (UV-Vis, NIR, fluorescence spectrometers, IR wavemeter, in-house custom fixtures)
• Lead and work closely with electrical, mechanical, and software engineers to develop robust, high-quality sensor solutions
• Development and delivery of one-off prototypes to support business efforts
• Leading optical systems through maturation from concept development to engineering to production
• Works closely with key customer technical teams – important to be able to develop trusting relationships with customers
• Develops a clear understanding of customer technical requirements, and is able to translate into plans to address involving multiple sites and external partners
• Generating intellectual property including patents and staying current of competitive landscape
• Generate new ideas and help drive technology development project pipeline 
• Use Six Sigma tools to deliver customer-focused products that are expected to have 10 year life
• Design of experiments and create test matrices to verify designs
• Significant hands-on building, testing, and trouble-shooting required
• Travel required, including international (< 20%)
