Join a dynamic and highly motivated team of Human Factors (HF) practitioners that design, evaluate/test, integrate, and support the certification of state-of-the art flight systems within Honeywell Aerospace Technologies. You will be integral in creating solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers. As a HF Principal Systems Engineer, you will be involved in every aspect of the systems life cycle, from ideation via maturation to certification.

The HF Principal Systems Engineer is a technical leadership position with high visibility within the organization. You will be working in the HF Center of Excellence (COE), leading HF activities across current and future products. The HF COE performs HF systems design, analysis, and evaluations/tests for the Air Transport, Regional, Business, General Aviation, Helicopter, and Urban Air Mobility market segments.

The qualities and attributes needed for this role include a big-picture perspective of flight deck HF methods, processes, and best practices resulting in products which are safe, certifiable, easy to use, increase operational performance and efficiency, and provide a superior pilot experience. The ideal candidate will have broad experience with flight deck Human Machine Interface (HMI) design, evaluation/test, and certification. Expertise in flight operations, systems engineering, project planning and execution is also highly recommended. The ideal candidate will be highly self-motivated, have strong networking capabilities, and able to lead by action to improve the global HF capabilities across Honeywell Aerospace Technologies.

You will report directly to our Sr. Technical Manager for Human Factors, and you’ll work out of our Phoenix Deer Valley location on a Hybrid work schedule.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

General Activities:

  • Providing technical expertise and supervision on a variety of programs. Use expert knowledge of flight deck HF and Honeywell/Industry standards, processes, and tools to complete and ensure compliance of various products.
  • Supporting strategic planning and Advanced Technology efforts related to HF.
  • Mentoring junior HF Engineers. Develop and implement training modules as necessary.
  • Assisting in building a global Honeywell Aerospace Technologies HF workforce.
  • Developing a strong understanding of the operational environment for assigned HF projects.
  • Establishment of relevant HF engineering design requirements.
  • Contribution to contractual and technical design documentation from an HF perspective.
  • Managing and coordinating common HF engineering efforts across multiple programs.
  • Interfacing with the various internal stakeholders including the Advanced Technology, Systems Engineering, Program, ODA, Flight Operations, and Chief Engineering teams.
  • Contact with OEM customers for overall product status, standards, etc. Candidate will be a key focal in development of new business opportunities and product lines.
  • Supporting business development activities, to include creation and review of quotation estimates for programs.
  • Understanding and help with export classification.
  • Protect the intellectual property rights of the company.
  • Represent Honeywell Aerospace Technologies Human Factors in both corporate enterprise functional organizations as well as industry committees.

Design and Analysis Activities:

  • Reviewing Advanced Technology assessments to assist and ensure the smooth transition of prototype designs (pre TRL 6) into product COEs.
  • Definition of Human Machine Interface (HMI) philosophy and HMI design requirements.
  • Leading the development of HF design guidelines and standard work across Honeywell Aerospace Technologies.
  • Apply structured quantitative or subjective methods to generate HF requirements and ensure human centered design and optimum usability in the operation of flight deck systems.
  • Deploy physical and cognitive expertise to support HF analysis (e.g., Task Analysis, HF Validation of Functional Hazard Assessments, Human Error Analysis, application of HF criteria to flight deck systems HMI, Function Allocation Analysis, and cockpit integration).
  • Interact with Honeywell pilots to develop and assess overall flight deck systems physical and cognitive usability to ensure flight deck interfaces and automation complements the capabilities of pilots.
  • Participate in engineering-related pilot-centered design activities related to flight deck HMI, including HMI prototyping, simulation, and digital modeling.
  • Create and manage documentation for HF activities related to new flight deck system programs.

Evaluation/Test Activities:

  • Leading pilot acceptance evaluations for associated design implementations to include coordination with various systems engineering teams, Centers of Excellence (COE) teams, and evaluation/test participants (e.g., pilots).
  • Deploy physical and cognitive expertise to support evaluations/tests.
  • Prepare documentation such as certification plans and reports, test plans, observation grids, and error logs.
  • Definition of appropriate HF evaluation/test procedures and methods for intended function, crew workload, situation awareness, human error, etc.
  • Definition of HF requirements for evaluation/test facilities (e.g., mockups, benches, simulators, or aircraft).
  • Elaborate and conduct part-task and scenario-based evaluations/tests of flight deck systems.

Qualification and Certification Activities:

  • Coordinating and presenting regulatory subject matter as an expert to help lead global certification approaches.
  • Identification of applicable flight deck HF certification regulation.
  • Definition of required HF level of scrutiny and qualification certification and means of compliance for Honeywell TSOs and STCs and in support of customer TCs.
  • Creation of HF qualification and certification artifacts.
  • Support qualification and certification activities – working hand in hand with ODA and Chief Engineering teams.
