POSITION SUMMARY The Parent Involvement Coordinator serves as the liaison between school and parents, relaying the needs of one to the other. The Coordinator shall assist in educating teachers and staff on how to communicate and work effectively with parents as equal partners, advise and train parents on how to address issues with the staff in school meetings, and serve as a school-based mediator for concerns and comments made by parents and community members. The Coordinator will provide referrals to community-based services for families where needed, develop community collaborations, promote sharing of power with parents as decision-makers and help parents understand the educational system so they can become better advocates for their children’s education. JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of an Associate s degree in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology or related field
Minimum three (3) years of experience working with and supporting at-risk students and families
Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license with no serious violations
Excellent communication (oral, written and listening) and interpersonal relations skills with children, adults and community agencies
Experience serving as an advocate for children and parents
Self-motivated leader who can work independently and as part of a team
Understand and respect the diversity of families’ economic, linguistic and cultural backgrounds and situations
Ability to work flexible hours including some nights and weekends
Ability to work in a confidential environment and maintain confidentiality of all school-related matters
Excellent problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills
Strong computer skills
Strong understanding of student achievement data
Experience with developing collaborative partners and building relationships with constituents in the community
RESPONSIBILITIES The nature of responisibilities is a reflection of the job description but it is not limited to the details as outlined. Parent Involvement Resources:
Provide workshops, classes and activities for parents at their local school(s) on a regular basis
Coordinate and lead monthly Parent Advisory Council meeting
Assist parents in linking with other agencies when students or families are in need of outside intervention by securing health services, clothing or other provisions that may improve student attendance and academic performance
Create opportunities for parents who have limited English proficiency, a disability or are underrepresented because of social economics or racial barriers to participate in education initiatives and enrichment workshops
Work with administration in providing resources and help to parents with children who have chronic discipline problems
Compliance:
Maintain excellent records of all parent involvement activities, reports, surveys, funding, annual program evaluations and communications to parents
Maintain thorough documentation of all services extended to students and their families
Ensure compliance of the school or District’s parent involvement program with all state and federal guidelines
Program Coordination and Collaboration:
Serve as the liaison between parents, District, staff and community partners alike to ensure communication is open and productive
Coordinate and implement research-based strategies for the school/District parent involvement program to engage parents in improving student achievement
Collaborate with local, regional, and state organizations to create opportunities to help families understand school academic standards, assessments and report cards
Collaborate with parents, teachers and school administrators to develop a family-friendly school climate
Collaborate with other parent engagement professionals
Promote parents as partners by involving them in the decision-making process regarding parental involvement activities and school improvement
Other:
Work with administrators, school interventionists, school counselors and social workers to identify emerging issues and needed services for parents and/or students
Articulate needs of parents and coordinate and provide training for staff
Confer with administrators, staff, teachers and community leaders on school problems and needs
Contact and perform home visits of students with severe attendance, academic, and/or social problems
Lead transitional meetings with middle school administrators, teachers, school counselors and/or social workers, where applicable, to ensure proper transfer of services (spring)
Provide transportation for parents and students to appointments, court appearances, etc, when needed
Participate in appropriate professional development workshops and attend any required meetings
