Homer A. Plessy Community School is Hiring a Restorative Approaches Coordinator Near Orleans, LA

Job Title: Restorative Approaches Coordinator

Reports to: Middle School Principal

Start Date: July 1, 2024

Position Summary:

The Restorative Approaches Coordinator, in collaboration with school leadership, will lead efforts to develop and sustain a school culture and learning environment in which all students are growing academically, emotionally, and socially. More specifically, the Restorative Approaches Coordinator, will drive the development and/or management of school-wide restorative approaches. With the school leadership team, this person will ensure that restorative practices are implemented by all staff members and that each student is appropriately supported so that they can make progress towards their individual goals. The Restorative Approaches Coordinator also acts as an ambassador of the institution’s values, ensuring that established practices and approaches are aligned and implemented effectively and efficiently.

They will:

  • Promote and embody the techniques and tenets of a Trauma Informed School
  • Plan and facilitate at least 3 professional development workshops around restorative approaches and practices for staff and families throughout the school year.
  • Provide resources for staff members on restorative practices and approaches that can be used in the classroom.
  • Engage staff and families in a distributed counseling model to understand grade-level expectations, setting student goals, and providing tailored support to their students.
  • Foster inclusive environments that celebrate and accommodate diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Develop and implement consistent communication with parents/families to both celebrate and address student behaviors.
  • Conduct restorative conversations between students and/or staff
  • Work closely, and consistently communicates with the Principal, Head Dean, SEL Coordinator/Director Of Behavior Intervention, Social Workers, and Director of Special Education

Position Responsibilities:

School Culture and Environment

  • Supports the school leadership and administration in the development and management of school expectations
  • Observes and provides feedback to teachers around restorative approaches and practices
  • Trains teachers on how to implement strategies in their classes to manage behavior
  • Builds relationships with the students, teachers, parents, and community
  • Directly collaborates with the Head Dean and Director of Behavior Intervention on students with continuing behavior needs
  • Collaborates with SPED Case Managers, when applicable

School Safety

  • Monitors cafeteria and playground for a safe, calm, and positive culture
  • Investigates student incidents and determines next steps for student safety and accountability
  • Supports in all school conflict incidents

Behavior Systems and Management

  • Develops and fosters age-appropriate behavior management systems and practices which support students and allows staff to maximize their teaching and learning
  • Collaborates with teachers, the Director of Behavior Intervention, Social Workers, and the Student Support Team to ensure that students receive the necessary behavioral and academic interventions.
  • Communicates with parents about student accountability and how to repair harm
  • Recommends and supports behavior interventions for students in collaboration with Director of Behavior Intervention
  • Manages the quality of In School Suspension (ISS) to ensure the implementation of restorative approaches and practices

Education & Experience:

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree.
  • Degree in social work, counseling or related field, strongly preferred
  • 3-5 years working in an urban, open admissions school
  • Experience working with and a commitment to high needs students and families
  • Demonstrated record of setting high expectations for student behavior and school culture
  • Demonstrated record of disciplining students and establishing accountability in a positive, productive manner
  • Demonstrated record of developing and managing systems effectively
  • Demonstrated record of supporting and managing adults
  • Strong organizational and record keeping skills
  • Proficient in student information systems such as PowerSchool, Kickboard, SchoolRunner, etc.
  • Experience implementing restorative practices

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear.
  • Light lifting of equipment may be required (up to 20 lbs.)
