DELI CLERK

PURPOSE STATEMENT: To maximize sales and profit in the Deli Department through courteous customer service.

SIGNIFICANT JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. To greet all customers, respond to customer questions/requests and explain store policies in a courteous manner.
  2. To wrap, package and sell the product: sandwiches, pizza, salads, sliced fruits, vegetables, sliced meats, cheese, desserts, party trays, garnishes, vegetables, samples and fried foods.
  3. To process customer purchases quickly and accurately by the operation of an electronic cash register, scanner and scale.
  4. To review the perishable department Communication Board daily for updated materials and follow the guidelines posted for the Sampling Program and intercom announcements.
  5. To prepare/organize the cooler/freezer/preparation area for receipt of merchandise, unload trucks, verify the merchandise against the invoice, inspect the delivery for shortages/damage and quality, sort cases for stocking or product preparation and code-date all case items in the cooler/freezer.
  6. To adhere to all local, state and federal health codes and regulations and to clean department floors, mirrors, case, tables, cooler, freezer, production equipment, product preparation area, and shelves. Safely use cleaning equipment and chemicals.
  7. To transport cases to sales floor/cooler/ freezer/product preparation area either on stocking carts or pallets, open cases, place merchandise in the designated cooler/freezer/case/ shelf/display position/area, check the product code/freshness date and "face/front"/rotate the front row of each display.
  8. To assure the safety of self, customers and co-workers by understanding and practicing store safety rules and notifying a supervisor of any potential hazard immediately. Pick up/remove all broken containers, packing materials/boxes from the sales floor or product-preparation area immediately.
  9. To understand the operation, safety requirements and restraints of a baler, case cutter, pallet jack, intercom, pricing gun, slicer, scales, wrapper, steam table, fryer, stove, (must be 18 years or older to operate the pallet jack, baler, slicer, steam table and fryer and other equipment).
  10. To evaluate product quality and move damaged/unsalable and "returnable" products from the case to the preparation area, re-processing the merchandise into a saleable form or marking the product down in price according to markdown policy.
  11. To check case and cooler/freezer temperatures 4 times daily utilizing the time keeping system to record each check.
  12. To record “out-of-stock” conditions and the time they occur and report to the department manager.
  13. To fill/stock: sliced meat and cheese case, salad case, other display cases, and counter and display tables throughout the store.
  14. To perform miscellaneous tasks assigned by supervisors and managers, substituting for absent workers and performing any additional tasks necessary to provide products and services to customers during peak periods of business.

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

  1. Basic mathematical ability (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and ability to count.
  2. Able to give/receive complex verbal instructions/descriptions to/from supervisors/co-workers/employees concerning store/department policy/procedures and use of equipment.
  3. A stable work and educational history.
  4. The ability to read and write English; able to read instructions, merchandise labels, warehouse order codes, numbers, reports, printed paper invoices and order forms.
  5. Make judgments concerning the placement of merchandise on the case/shelf/display, case opening procedures, extent of unsalable product damage, conversation with customers, selling of product, display of product, use of packaging materials for product, quality of product for display and ordering of merchandise.
  6. Able to open cases and stock so that product will not be damaged.
  7. Able to clearly price mark/label products for customers and cashiers.
  8. Good interpersonal communications.

PREFERRED:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Prior experience in a related type of job.
  3. Prior experience operating a baler, case cutter, cleaning/sanitation equipment, pallet jack, intercom, pricing gun, knife, slicer, scales, steam table, wrapper, fryer, stove, (must be 18 years or older to operate the pallet jack, baler, slicer, steam table, and fryer).

TASKS OF THE JOB –This position generally requires:

  1. Mobility:
  • Move to perform: the receiving of product, movement of product to the floor or storage area, opening/cutting of cases, inspect product quality, sorting of cases/merchandise, building of displays in the aisle and on the case/rack, the allocation of space in bakery categories, order merchandise and supplies, cleaning and maintenance, removal of trash/debris from the department, price marking and signage throughout the store, maximum of 100 yards.
  1. Work on tile or concrete for a maximum of 8 hours in duration.
  2. Lift a maximum of 50 lbs. from 6 inches to 84 inches on to overhead/ cooler/freezer storage rack.
  3. Move a maximum of 50 lbs. up to 15 yards.
  4. Pick up/move/attach signage/sort/open"face/front" case/item/ trash from floor/shelf/cart/pallet/cooler/freezer storage.
  5. Attain merchandise/cases on the top shelf of cooler/freezer storage shelves/rack, up to 84 inches from the floor.
  6. Reach forward/down up to 36 inches attain/place merchandise, to prepare and package product and to clean shelves/floor area or control maintenance/stocking equipment.
  7. Reach up to place signs and banners in place.
  8. Handle cash, checks, WIC and other vouchers, credit/debit, EBT transactions, paper/plastic bags and store’s multi-page ads.
  9. Handle labels/signs/tags, cardboard/packaging, debris and case cutter/utility knife.
  10. Grasp and handle wet/iced/cold/metal/paper/plastic products.
  11. Twist at the waist while cleaning, cutting/opening, sorting, load/unloading, moving/removing merchandise and stocking merchandise.
  12. Move stocking carts, pallet jacks (up to 300 lbs.) and maintenance equipment approximately 25 yards.
  13. Climb on ladders, racks, cases, shelving, and stairs up to 3 feet in height.
  14. Stock shelves, rotate product, "face\front" shelves 8 inches from the floor to 36" inches in height.
  15. Be aware of cases, case-cutter edge, case strips, shelf location, product size/description, equipment controls, case load limits, price-marking equipment, department production equipment, customers, co-workers, shelf tags, labels on products, stocking carts, temperature gauges/controls, invoice/packing slips, code date, reports, packaging materials, debris on floor, aisle markers, and signs.
  16. Perceive color difference of product, product labels and condition of product.
  17. Respond to customer, co workers and vendors questions and responses.
  18. Respond to the sound of baler/pallet jack and cleaning equipment.
  19. Use and respond to the intercom/phone system.
  20. Read case labels/strips, signs, tags, shelf signs, code dates, invoices, temperature gauges, reports, numbers and aisle markers, chemical-warning labels, operational forms and reports.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Inside work with extreme variations in heat/cold/dust/humidity from back door/compressors/ cooler/freezer/preparation area.
