Assistant Store Manager

Primary responsibilities

  • To manage store operations to achieve maximum sales and profit while minimizing labor costs and maintaining optimum store conditions
  • To attain sales, profit, expense, and labor budgets
  • To manage the store so that every customer receives prompt, courteous, and friendly service
  • Know the budgeted inventory level of each department and to work with the Department Manager to achieve them
  • In conjunction with the Store Manager to determine the needs in the store by performing a store walk, at minimum daily, to include the back room.
  • To communicate the needs of each area of the store to Department Managers and fellow Assistant Store Managers
  • To aid in the ordering of merchandise and supplies on schedule from the authorized vendors and the receiving and handling of merchandise and supplies
  • To perform and direct an outstanding store condition program to include floors, windows, shelving, and equipment maintenance, and effective back door and front-end security procedures, including enforcement of store employee purchase policies, and an effective store safety and fire prevention program
  • To direct, through proper supervision, that all DSD products are authorized, checked in properly, recorded in DSD System/Price Book, and SRP update on the front-end systems
  • To assure, through proper supervision, that all merchandise is checked out through the front end at the correct price and all price changes are properly completed on the front-end system and shelf tags
  • To assure prompt and accurate service at the front end and service departments by properly supervising the training and scheduling of personnel and to see that all customer requests and/or complaints are handled with courtesy
  • To assist in providing analysis on conduct and insight for store meetings to review merchandising, sales planning, and operating issues and to keep employees informed about matters concerning them according to their job
  • To aid in the selection, hiring, and training of store employees and make effective use of available training programs and materials
  • To aid in the scheduling of store personnel and to review the schedules with each department head
  • To aid in evaluating employees’ performances regularly (annually at minimum), giving personal recognition for outstanding performance, to recommend personnel for promotion, and to take necessary action with those not performing up to the set standards
  • To aid and perform additional Store Managerial duties if the Store Manager is absent as necessary

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Assistant Store Managers directly reports to the Store Manager


Qualifications

  • Able to give/receive complex verbal instructions/descriptions to/from supervisors/co-workers/employees concerning store/department policy/procedures and use of equipment
  • Make decisions concerning: the placement of merchandise on the shelf/display, pricing, allocation of shelf space, employee scheduling, expense control, order of product/supplies, hiring/supervision of employees, merchandising plans, departments operational policies and procedures and the sales/promotion of merchandise.
  • Knowledge of regulations/laws that would apply to operation of the business: Wage & Hour, Family Medical Leave Act, OSHA, ADA, EEO, Standard, Nutrition Labeling & Education Act, Weights and Measures etc.
  • Prior experience as Assistant Store Manager
  • Prior Grocery experience

Specific tasks

  • Lift, twist, move and carry a maximum of 50 lbs., from the floor to shelving, or overhead racks in the store and cooler/freezer
  • Maintain active signage and pricing in all departmental areas
  • Care for signs, banners, and debris from daily operations
  • Accurately and efficiently handle cash, debit/credit, EBT/WIC, coupons, and vouchers
  • Respond to customers, coworkers, and vendor questions and responses promptly and politely
  • Proper usage of store phone and intercom systems

Work Environment Note:

Inside work with transitions of heat/cold/humidity/dust from various areas in and out of the store.
