Homefull is Hiring a Youth Diversion Specialist Near Dayton, OH

Homefull, in an important leading role, has joined a community initiative to help prevent and end youth homelessness in Montgomery County and we are hiring! This position will be part of a team working with youth and young adults experiencing homelessness to avoid needing to stay in shelter and gain successful housing stability to launch themselves into an adult life of stability. As a part of the Montgomery County Youth Homelessness Demonstration Project, this position would be part of making great change in the Miami Valley to help our youth avoid the traumas of homelessness and have a community of support that will help them achieve success in all parts of their life by starting with the foundation of housing stability.

Title: Youth Diversion Specialist

Reports to: YHDP/CE Program Supervisor
Job summary
As a member of the Youth Diversion and Rapid Resolution and Youth CE team, the Youth Diversion Specialist seeks to assist unstably housed youth avoid needing emergency shelter and/or creating a rapid exit from shelter plan. This position works with other providers in the system to minimize youth shelter entries and shorten lengths of time in shelter. This team collectively works to achieve all performance outcome goals. This program’s primary goal is keeping youth out of the homeless system and help them obtain or maintain housing stability. This project is part of the local continuum’s Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP).
Summary of essential job functions
The Youth Diversion Specialist will be responsible for:
  • Providing supportive case management services to assigned youth clients to help avoid stays in homeless shelters or if needed to reduce the length of stay in shelter;
  • Utilizing progressive engagement skills to connect assigned youth clients to needed community resources and other systems in order to contribute to housing stability and avoid future need for entering the homeless system;
  • Assisting with mediation services between youth and landlords, roommates, or family member in order to resolve disputes or interpersonal challenges in order to help the youth maintain housing;
  • Assisting assigned youth with housing navigation, including but not limited to: searching for affordable housing, applying for rental units, viewing units, etc.;
  • Conducting problem-solving with assigned youth clients related to housing stability;
  • Assisting youth clients to apply for rental assistance funds from within the program, collecting required paperwork and verifications in order to expedite a rapid exit from shelter or divert the client from needing to stay in shelter;
  • Addressing day to day client concerns/crises and reinforce agency priorities and policies;
  • Working with the Youth Action Board or other YHDP groups as assigned;
  • Working with supervisor and the Agency/Program Admin teams to maintain high quality client records and maintaining up to date and accurate client records inside the local HMIS;
  • Engaging in Housing First practices;
  • Exhibiting qualities valued by Homefull including showing dignity and respect to all, valuing and demonstrating a commitment to diversity/equity/inclusion, and a commitment to performance and quality improvement;
  • Completing other duties as assigned.
Minimum requirements
Bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience in a related field (social work, counseling, etc.) preferred. Case Management experience with a youth focus preferred. Must have valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation.
Abilities required
Ability to collaborate and build positive, professional relationships. Ability to represent Homefull well both internally and externally. Excellent oral and written communications skills, presentation skills, and computer skills including Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook.
