Holyoke Public Schools is Hiring a Summer counselor Near Holyoke, MA

The Department of Enrichment and Extended Learning is responsible for the planning and oversight of afterschool, vacation, and summer learning opportunities that meet the unique needs and pathways for students attending Holyoke Public Schools.

We believe that if we :

  • Identify the knowledge and skills needed for students to step up successfully and develop a project-based, standards-aligned curriculum across all grade levels
  • Embed research best practices throughout every aspect of program design
  • Engage CBOs and other enrichment providers in planning and implementing bold, innovative, project-based, and standards informed enrichment
  • Engage and support the best teachers through high-quality curriculum resources, professional learning, and ongoing observation and feedback
  • Involve and build relationships with students and families throughout the process

Holyoke Public Schools offers programming that reinforces skills learned during the school year that will strengthen as areas of growth while providing learners with a supportive environment for students to develop their academic and social emotional growth.

The Summer School Counselor will play a pivotal role in creating a supportive and enriching environment for students attending our summer program.

You will provide guidance, support, and mentorship to students, fostering their academic, social, and emotional growth. Working collaboratively with staff and parents, you will facilitate a positive learning experience, promote a safe and inclusive atmosphere, and address the individual needs of students to ensure their success.

Responsibilities :

  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions to address students' academic, social, and emotional needs.
  • Develop and implement programs and activities that promote personal development, self-esteem, and positive relationships among students.
  • Assist students in setting academic and personal goals, providing guidance and support to help them achieve success.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and other staff members to identify students in need of additional support and develop strategies for intervention.
  • Monitor student behavior and intervene as necessary to address conflicts, promote positive interactions, and maintain a safe and respectful environment.
  • Communicate regularly with parents / guardians to provide updates on student progress, address concerns, and solicit feedback.
  • Serve as a resource for students and staff regarding academic, social, and behavioral issues, offering guidance and referrals to appropriate support services.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned by the summer school coordinator or program director.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree in counseling, psychology, education, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Previous experience working with children or adolescents in a counseling or mentoring capacity.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Knowledge of adolescent development, counseling techniques, and conflict resolution strategies.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, multitask, and prioritize responsibilities.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with the ability to support students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards related to counseling and student privacy.
