THE OPPORTUNITY

Responsible for total field management of assigned projects in a timely, profitable and professional manner. Oversee productivity of crafts and ensure efficient use of materials and equipment. Responsible for safety, supervising company personnel, maintaining positive employee relations, coordinating subcontractor personnel, project planning, scheduling, budgeting and cost control, selecting and maintaining equipment, documenting work changes and delays, building quality projects according to plans and specifications and maintaining positive client relations, resulting in high customer satisfaction. Must be willing to travel/relocate to construction projects.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Conduct business on the highest ethical level.
  • Promote safety to prevent accidents. Shut down HCS and subcontractor work if unsafe. Understand Safety and Accident Prevention Program and OSHA requirements. Provide all necessary personnel protective equipment and devices. Instruct foremen, subcontractors, and vendors to follow and enforce safety rules. Conduct and document weekly Tool Box Talk. Walk jobsites daily to check for unsafe practices and conditions. Follow safety rules personally to set an example for others. Investigate, file reports and ensure corrective action on all accidents and near misses. Assist in maintaining OSHA 300 logs. Provide first aid services if/when needed. Obtain HAZCOM programs and Material Safety Data Sheets from subcontractors. Ensure MSDS's are up-do-date. Establish jobsite security systems as necessary.
  • Establish labor requirements for projects and notify Payroll and Project Managers of labor needs. Coordinate new hire, random and post-accident drug testing. Hire, instruct, counsel, reprimand, and terminate employees in accord with company policies and procedures. Encourage all employees to work together with little or no friction. Code and complete time sheets daily. Submit time sheets weekly to Payroll. Coordinate peak temporary labor needs with vendors/agencies as required.
  • Assist in the selection, direction, and scheduling of subcontractors when possible. Chair weekly meetings with each subcontractor. Coordinate job progress review meetings with Project Managers and subcontractors and create/update, post and submit three-week schedules on a weekly basis. Supervise all subcontractor employees. Ensure subcontractors have adequate staffing and equipment on the job to perform the work. Inspect the quality of subcontractors' work. Assist subcontractors in the coordination of material deliveries. Keep subcontractors on schedule and inform Project Managers when the subcontractor falls behind. Maintain positive lines of communication.
  • Establish project work days and hours and develop and update project schedules. Monitor project progress against schedules and through daily reports noting schedule adherence or difficulties. Review shop drawings. Communicate with the Project Manager and subcontractor's field personnel to schedule updates and identify problems or opportunities for improvement. Maintain a "RECORD" set of drawings.
  • Be aware of budgeted costs and actual costs accumulated. Strive for more economical and innovative construction approaches by understanding the latest/most advanced methods and techniques. Work to improve labor costs. Review subcontractor/supplier pay applications. Prepare monthly cost and labor projection reports. Inform Project Manager of changes in work, delays, or other activities impacting project cost or schedule. Maintain updated set of plans with current approved changes per the guidelines issues for plan updates by HCS.
  • Cost code and submit copies of the Field Purchase Orders weekly. Sign, cost code and submit delivery tickets weekly.
  • Set up and maintain an efficient field office, including temporary utilities, phones, etc. Determine equipment needs for the HCS scope of work that is available. Attain General Superintendent approval for large tool purchases. Rent necessary equipment for the completion of the project.
  • Assist the Project Manager with shop drawings and submittals. Document delays, problems, meetings with owners, architects, engineers, and project managers, schedule and cost comments, and other required information in daily reports. Include backup photographs. Document and keep on file concrete, city, county, parish, laboratory, engineering, DHEC, OSHA, etc. regulatory and other tests or inspections.
  • Record all tools moved between jobs and inform the office of new tools purchased. Submit new tool numbers to Project Managers.
  • Must be able to use instruments such as transits and levels for site and building layout or request help as needed from an engineer.
  • Work evenings and weekends as necessitated by responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate HCS culture for maximum customer satisfaction and team performance.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • Ten (10) years of progressive experience including carpentry and supervision, preferably for a commercial general contractor.
  • High school degree or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
  • Training in 10-hour OSHA, 30-hour OSHA and up-to-date first-aid and CPR required prior to and throughout employment.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as contracts, specifications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, schedules and procedure manuals.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication and facilitation/presentation skills with the ability to build rapport with all employees and managers.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate task and project schedules, including short interval planning.
  • Demonstrated skills in building layout and control.
  • Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to solve routine coordination problems.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The physical demands for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the Superintendent include the ability to lift and/or move items of various sizes and weights, and move safely about an office and a jobsite environment during all phases of construction, which may require the Superintendent to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl or otherwise move safely through small/enclosed spaces.
  • The working conditions of the Superintendent are generally in a jobsite environment but will occasionally involve activities in and office and at client meetings. The Superintendent may occasionally be exposed to extreme noises and temperatures/weather, hazardous materials, gases/fumes, asbestos, carcinogens and space restrictions.
