Hoefer Wysocki Architecture is Hiring a QA Manager Near Leawood, KS

The primary responsibilities are to oversee Quality Assurance efforts across all studios, market sectors, and regional offices and to assist with the writing, editing, and coordination of Project Manuals. This encompasses a variety of building and construction types that include Healthcare, Higher Education, Multi-family Residential, Hospitality, Civic/Public Safety, Commercial, Retail, and Corporate Workplace projects. A successful Candidate will initially provide Quality Assurance (QA) reviews for all projects at various milestones throughout the project lifecycle to verify compliance with code, constructability and best practices are being met. Ultimately, this person will build a QA department of several individuals to assist all offices in both QA reviews as well as specification assistance as outlined below. This detail-oriented individual will regularly update the office master specifications, and prepare, maintain, and update master sections developed specifically for certain market sectors or building types. Additionally, they will coordinate with the teams throughout the office on specification education to support teams in the development of their project manuals. This individual will stay at the forefront of specification technology and BIM integration. This includes knowledge of LOA’s, LOD’s, Assembly Codes, Ominclass, keynotes and the role they play in Virtual Design and Construction to assist the team to create outline specifications that are a reflection of an integrated BIM model.

Job Requirements
Essential Responsibilities:

  • Constantly maintain awareness of evolving building technology, codes, and systems. Research new products and materials, building sciences and construction processes.
  • Coordinate with project teams to respond to the technical implications of design decisions. Provide guidance on use of proposed building products and materials, their suitability for the intended application, and suggest alternatives when appropriate.
  • Actively participate in Quality Assurance reviews, project team constructability reviews, and staff training and mentorship processes. Perform technical and QA reviews of the construction documents by “redlining” the drawing set to verify that the technical specifications and related drawings are coordinated to meet Hoefer Welker office standards including all consultant specification formatting conventions.
  • Maintain and promote in-house specification procedures and process. Work directly with the Construction Administration Department to improve the office master specifications through lessons learned.
  • Support the Project Management team to establish resource planning for preparation of specifications deliverables for project plans.
  • Research software and technology for BIM integration of technical specifications, make recommendations, and train staff accordingly.
  • Provide technical assistance concerning construction and bidding. Support specification updates and changes as needed with the project teams in the preparation of addenda and in review of requests for substitution.
  • Assist teams during the CA phase in their review of submittals and RFI’s as it relates to specified materials, products or systems.
  • Maintain awareness of sustainable design ratings systems, and sustainable products and materials. Incorporate sustainable materials and products in specifications whenever possible, including LEED V.4 requirements that address HW’s ongoing commitment to sustainable design and material health.
  • Maintain awareness of the Hoefer Welker Precautionary List and avoid specifying materials and products containing substances on the list whenever possible.
  • Experience with AIA contract documents and with preparing Procurement Requirements when required; receive owner’s Division 00 documents for inclusion in Project Manual; coordinate supplementary general conditions with client and Construction Manager General Conditions.
  • Collaborate with peers via regularly scheduled firm-wide internal learning and development conference calls, to share knowledge, develop best practices, and maintain awareness of industry reference standards and sources/locations.
  • Lead the development of specification policies and procedures so that office standards for Hoefer Welker are technically current and regularly updated. Contribute to meeting firm and project goals of excellence in design, execution, and sustainability to uphold quality standards for technical design, drawing templates, and office master specifications.
  • Support the development of in-house technical initiatives and office-wide training.
  • Self-check for accuracy, omissions, and legibility.
  • Review documents for adherence to building and accessibility codes. Verify project documentation is in compliance with the standards set forth by HW.
  • Confirm Quality Assurance Program is initiated and adhered to through the life of the project.
  • Provide detailed review of specifications and assist with model and document review as needed.

Education/Experience: It is preferred that this individual has a master’s or bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Construction Management, plus 15-20 years of experience in the design & construction industry. Prior experience with public client projects, especially working in U.S. government master specification systems and experience in design-build, developer driven focus is a plus. Experience with Veterans Administration and MATOC type projects is also desirable.

Certifications/Licenses/Registrations: Architectural registration required with current license, NCARB registration preferred. Certified Construction Specifier (CCS) certification is desirable. LEED Green Associate Accreditation (or similar sustainability-based accreditation) desired. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and willingness to use insured personal vehicle in the course of employment.

Qualifications/Skills: Successful candidate will have excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills with the ability to meet all deadlines. Strong verbal and written communication skills, communicating collaboratively in a team atmosphere of Project Architects, Project Managers, Clients, and Contractors. Candidate must be proficient in MasterSpec, Microsoft Office software, and familiar with ARCOM MasterSpec library. Candidate must have a working knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit, Bluebeam, and Newforma. Recent experience with Deltek Vantagepoint and eSpec, and BSD SpecLink is desirable.
