Primary Function:
Employ Grain Inspection and/or Nondestructive Test Operations to inspect castings to required techniques, standards, and specifications.
Tools and Equipment:
X-Ray machines, acquisition system, review system, film developing unit, black light lamps, densitometers, film step wedges, penetrameters, shim blocks, light meters, calipers, hoist, x-ray collector, proto Laue software, etch tanks, Geiger counter, Stereoscope, microscope, rulers, micrometers, fixtures, computers, film viewers, various dip tanks containing emulsifier, penetrant, water, ferric acid, phosphoric acid, anodic solution, and other solutions, drying unit, powder application unit, baskets, timers. Cast metal parts is the primary product to be tested. Ceramic Cores and other like material may also be inspected.

Working Procedure:
The following are the usual major job duties, but this job description does not preclude the performance of other duties as assigned by the supervisor:
  • Work under the direct observation and guidance of a level II or Level III
  • Operate all equipment as described
  • Must be able to function well as a member of a team
  • Receive parts from finishing or other areas. Ensure all operations are complete and are signed off
  • Follow work instructions, and determine parameters that need to be used for a job per outlined
  • Retrieve all applicable specifications, techniques, and folders necessary for jobs.
  • Must follow all safety requirements of job as outlined on the job safety card
  • Perform other duties or tasks related to the method and as assigned by the supervisor
  • Complete all paperwork associated with the job. Correctly maintain all forms and instruction sheets
  • Maintain a clean and orderly working environment
  • Inform your supervisor about problems that occur
  • May be required to handle hazardous waste by collecting and transferring the waste into proper containers at satellite storage areas or storage areas and assuring that the containers are properly inspected, labeled, and closed as required. Must follow correct instruction for handling hazardous waste and report any deviations to supervisor immediately. Must attend yearly instruction in hazardous waste handling and review of current procedures if job duties could affect non-compliance.
Special Skills and/or Experience:
Basic understanding of metallography and alloy grain structure desired.
Previous experiences in a casting plant or grain etch line preferable.
Vision requirement 20/20 or better, per J1 standard and well as color perception.
Some computer skills necessary, demonstrated familiarity with Excel spreadsheets.
Must be able to demonstrate basic math skills such as understanding % calculations, multiplication and division required to calculate adjustments to melt chemistry through testing
Strong communication skills to collaborate with other departments
Must be able to work independently.
Must be able to work flexible hours when necessary to cover other shifts and complete a fair share of the overtime workload.
Requires sufficient strength and physical dexterity to frequently lift up to 50 lbs.
Minimum Education Requirements:
Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
