Hispanic Access Foundation is Hiring a Forestry GIS Database Fellow Near Albuquerque, NM

Position. Forestry GIS Database Fellow
Duration. 8 Month Fellowship (34 weeks): Starting Early 2024 (dates are dependent upon the start date)

Fellowship Description.

The Office: Position is at the U.S. Forest Service Region 3 Southwest Office in Downtown Albuquerque NM.

Projects: The applicant will assist with GIS and database tasks associated with reporting Forest activities to Congress. In addition will learn software that geographically track Forest stand conditions and model future Forest growth.
Skills: Looking for applications with knowledge and skills in ESRI ArcPro, Database development. SQL and R programming language is not required but a plus. A degree in Geography, Computer Science, Biology, Forestry, or other related Natural Sciences Degree.
Communication and customer service skills are wanted, especially in regard to communicating or working with non-technical users.
Travel is less than 10% but will be required to attend trainings and to meet with Forest Service Staff in the National Forests.
Driver’s License is required for the position. Once started the applicant will need to start the process of acquiring a Federal Driver’s license.
Fellows will work and communicate with a HAF Program Manager during their fellowship. Fellows will be expected to participate in scheduled conference calls, webinars, and meetings conducted throughout their term. Fellows will capture photos and/or videos for reporting purposes and submit 3 blog posts highlighting their experience and development.
Special or Preferred skills.
The ideal candidate:
  • Comfortable working with ESRI GIS and Database software
  • Knowledge or experience working with ArcGIS Online (AGOL)
  • SQL and R programming skills.
  • Has customer service and able to work well with others.
  • Ability to communicate technical issues and details to non technical people.
  • Willingness to learn new programs and skills.
Minimum Qualifications.
  • Available to work full-time (40 hours per week) for 8 months (34 weeks)
  • Starting January 2024
  • Driver’s license required
  • RA will be required to drive a government vehicle
  • 3rd or 4th year undergraduate student, recent grads, or young professionals
  • Minimum: completed 2 years at accredited university or earned an Associate’s degree or higher
  • A degree in Geography, Computer Science, Biology, Forestry, or other related Natural Sciences Degree.
  • US citizenship or permanent residency. Interns must undergo a government background check if selected.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred but not required
Stipend Benefits.
  • $500 weekly pay stipend based on a 40-hour workweek*
  • $1,000 monthly housing stipend
  • $50 monthly commuting stipend (if in-person)
  • Option for health insurance coverage during full term
  • Up to $2,750 available for Forest Service work travel, orientation, trainings, professional development opportunities that align with RA role and goals
  • Direct Hire Authority Eligibility – after completing a minimum of 960 hours, DHA status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for Forest Service positions.
