Job Description

The Patient Account Representative IV assists in a variety of duties, including: 

  • This position is located in the HIlo Medical Center Acute Facility lobby in the registration area
  • Providing technical advice to lower level Patient Account Representatives
  • Handling resolution of patient complaints and complex billing issues (e.g. split billing, payer issues, denials from regulatory changes, etc.), 
  • Submits claims for reprocessing if an error is identified in the original charging or billing to ensure maximum resolution and reimbursement are received for services provided
  • Auditing and reviewing the work for completeness, accuracy and adherence to applicable policies and procedures

Required Qualifications: To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
General Experience: Two (2) years of typing, stenographic, clerical work, cashiering, data input, customer service skills or any combination of these experiences which duties demonstrated knowledge of English grammar, spelling, arithmetic, standard office equipment; and the ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, carry out procedures in clerical work systems, speak and write simply and directly, observe difference in copy and proofread words and numbers quickly and accurately, and operate various kinds of office equipment; and ability to deal effectively with others in eliciting information and providing service.
Substitution of Education for General Experience: An Associate’s or Bachelor’s from an accredited college or university may substitute for all of the General Experience required. Evidence of the appropriate training (e.g. official transcript or diploma) should be submitted with the application to be given credit for education. A legible photocopy will be accepted. However, HMC reserves the right to request an official copy.
Specialized Experience: Three (3) years work experience performing medical billing and collections in a hospital or long term care facility; interviewing patients and/or responsible persons to secure financial information, arranging for method of payment and extension of credit, and determining financial status; reviewing accounts for delinquent payments and contacting payer to seek payment.
Substitution of Specialized Experience: Work experience performing billing and collections in an organization (i.e., financial institution, retail, or hotel); interviewing persons to secure financial information, arranging for method of payment, extension of credit, reviewing accounts for delinquent payments and contacting payer to seek payment may substitute for one year of Specialized Experience.Company Description

Medical Examination Requirement

Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment examination, which includes drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, a tuberculosis (TB) screen. The cost for drug screening and blood draw for QuantiFERON and Titers, shall be borne by the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.

Shift Details

Must be available to work shifts, weekends and holidays as necessary based on hospital operations. Services are provided 24/7.
