Duties and Responsibilities
Note: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform some or all of the activities described below.
  • Assists construction, maintenance and transportation crews in the repair of roads, road shoulders, county owned rights-of-way, easements, bridges, storm water drainage systems, sidewalks, driveways and other related County assets.
  • Provide a level of maintenance of temporary traffic control functions and flagger duties.
  • Mows and trims grassy areas along roadways, rights-of-way, ponds, easements, in medians and around county assets.
  • Operates various types of power and hand tools, light construction equipment and light to medium capacity vehicles as needed.
  • Cuts and trims brush, weeds, trees and assist in removing trees, stumps, and perform maintenance of vegetated areas.
  • Spreads marl, sand, gravel and asphalt to repair roads.
  • Loads and unloads trucks.
  • Moves furniture, heavy equipment and materials.
  • Assists in the construction of concrete forms and culverts.
  • Sets barricades and performs flagman duties.
  • Carries tools and equipment to and from storage and work areas.
  • Performs routine service and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists pouring and finishing concrete driveways and sidewalks.
  • Maintains drainage ditches and canals.
  • Fills washouts and spreads fill dirt.
  • Use various types of power and hand tools and operate light construction equipment.
  • Assists with laying brick, cement block, performing concrete work, and related construction work for construction, maintenance and repair of public work structures.
  • Assists in the repair and maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Cleans work sites upon work completion.
  • Work in times of crises and during emergency events as they occur.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Job Specifications
  • Some knowledge of safety requirements involved with operation of required tools and equipment.
  • Some knowledge of proper operation of mechanical and powered grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Some knowledge in the use of cleaning supplies and equipment.
  • Skill in the use of custodial, grounds keeping and building trades equipment and tools.
  • Ability to follow established procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Ability to follow oral instructions.
  • Ability to stand, bend and kneel.
  • Ability to work outside in a subtropical climate and adverse weather conditions.
Physical Requirements
  • Requires bending, climbing, stooping, kneeling or crouching at ground levels, standing for long periods of time, and eye and hand coordination.
  • Required to work outside in a subtropical climate under adverse weather, and high noise levels.
  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment and tools.
  • Required to lift a minimum of five (5) lbs. and greater with an average of forty-five (45) lbs. with occasional lifting up to approximately ninety (90) pounds over uneven, rough terrain.

  • Heavy Work- Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Minimum Qualifications Required
  • Completion of Sixth grade; AND
  • Six months of experience assisting in general maintenance or construction work.
Emergency Management Responsibilities
In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee's department, the County's Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency/disaster.
