Hillsboro Medical Center is Hiring a Senior Cost Accountant Near Hillsboro, OR

POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Cost Accountant will be responsible for developing a framework or methodology to enable reporting of contribution margin by episode of care, physician, and service line/medical specialty so that management can use the information to make decisions which enhance organizational performance. This will require an ability to understand the information available from a number of separate systems and work with IT, Supply Chain, Clinicians, and Departmental Managers to develop an effective and reliable solution. As owner of the cost accounting initiative and contribution margin reporting, the Senior Cost Accountant will be expected to partner with both leaders and financial analysts on ad hoc analyses to support budgeting and forecasting work, as well as pro forma development.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Performed majority of the time:

· Coordinates report preparation and production for decision support.

o Understands and makes recommendations to Finance and senior management about the cost accounting and decision support reporting capabilities within Axiom.

o Coordinates and confirms report categorizations (service lines, departments, etc.) with Finance management so that those categorizations can be reflected effectively in reports.

o Participates with Finance management to define and maintain access to reporting, based on agreed access protocols.

o Assures consistent data extraction and flow into the Cost Accounting and Decision Support Systems, coordinating with IT and other relevant personnel.

o Trains or provides training for authorized users in report production.

· Oversees and maintains Cost Accounting system for the organization.

o Understands and tracks changes in departments, accounts and job codes across all entities.

o Maintains and updates relevant statistics and measures, including manual statistics if needed, to support cost accounting.

o Reviews and confirms validity of costing and related results.

· Oversee and maintain decision support system for the organization.

o Outlines and understands the decision support reporting and analytics process.

o Reviews and validates all data loads to ensure reliable reporting data.

o Promotes decision support analytics and self-service reporting within the organization to ensure sound business decision making.

· Ensures Axiom software is functioning effectively.

o Maintains high level of understanding of and technical proficiency in use of the Axiom systems overall and the Cost Accounting and Decision Support modules specifically.

o Coordinates Axiom maintenance and use with finance leadership.

· Ensures all departments are engaged and effective.

o Promotes common opportunities for consistent, shared practices across the organization.

o Recognizes the range of different capabilities among stakeholders and help mold those capabilities to maximize effective results.

o Reviews and ensures leaders are engaged and supporting the processing/validating of data loading and cost processing.

· Collaborates with finance leadership to build and maintain shared organization approaches, systems, and communication.

o Looks for and promote opportunities for shared learnings and best practices.

o Builds shared mechanisms to coordinate communication, work plans, deliverable schedules, etc.

· Plans for system improvement.

o Maintains and implements a periodic updating and improvement plan for the Cost Accounting and Decision Support system.

o Makes recommendations to management about enhancements and improvements to the Cost Accounting and Decision Support system.

o Defines, implements, and maintains a range of system performance metrics to assure a baseline from which to measure system effectiveness.

· Conducts ad hoc reports as requested.

· Problem identification and solving as needed.

Performed occasionally but critical to successful performance of the job:

· Presents in an organized and understandable manner, complex healthcare financial issues to individuals who are trained and focused in clinical disciplines (physician, nurses, managers of clinical departments, etc.) as well as individuals (Board Members) who do not work in the healthcare environment on a daily basis.

· Participates in implementation of Cost Accounting and Decision Support System(s)

o Works with vendor and implementation team leadership to understand and structure regular work processes, data flows, and validation and reporting required for cost accounting and decision support.

o Documents work processes, data flows, validation, reporting, etc. and decisions to track and adjust as systems and processes evolve.

o Participates in preparation of plans to transition from project initiation to on-going operations.

o Finalizes work assignments for the organization and entity personnel responsible for cost accounting.

o Develops education and training programs for finance personnel and leaders across the organization.

o Identifies initial reporting and system information needed to initiate decision support activities.

· Undertakes regular training in use of the Cost Accounting and Decision Support system to maximize its effectiveness within the organization.

Decision making and budget responsibilities:

· Decisions can impact the organizational financial planning and reporting.

· Supports leadership with budget planning.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education:

Required

· Baccalaureate degree in Finance, Accounting or Business.

Preferred

· MBA

Experience:

Required

· Five or more (5 ) years’ financial analysis experience demonstrating advanced analytical and technical skills.

· Significant exposure to finance, budgeting, accounting, decision support analytics, and cost accounting.

Preferred

· Healthcare finance experience.

Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations:

Required

· N/A

· CMA

· CHFP

· FHFMA

Job Related Skills, Abilities and Behaviors:

Required

· Excellent quantitative and analytic skills.

· Strong communication skills, both oral and written, and the ability to work well with a wide range of leaders.

· Superior technical ability, including Microsoft Office products (Excel, Access, Word and PowerPoint), and data base management and related tools.

· Ability to grasp, master and become highly proficient in use of Axiom-EPM and/or similar products.

· Ability to manage multiple projects.

· Strong customer service orientation and excellent interpersonal skills to develop effective working relationships across the organization.

· Strong time management and planning skills combined with the ability to delegate effectively to meet recurring deadlines.

· Ability to function in a complex organizational environment while balancing conflicting priorities and regular deadlines.

Preferred

· Proficiency with Strata or Axiom Management Reporting Tools at time of hire.

· Bilingual skills a plus.
