POSITION SUMMARY

Position Summary

The Pharmacy Intern works under the direction of and co-signed by a licensed pharmacist, assumes tasks necessary to convey daily Pharmacy and IV admixture products and clinical monitoring service to the patients.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Performed majority of the time:

· After reviewing with the pharmacist, provides clinical drug information to physicians and nursing.

· Excellent customer service skills to caregivers both inpatient and outpatient to meet the needs of our patients.

· Interviews patients for medication admission histories.

· Obtains pharmacist verification for all medications prior to delivering to patient

· Prepares sterile medications safely and accurately in laminar flow hoods per USP 797 and USP 800 regulations.

· Maintains adequate stock of IV room bulk medication.

· Responsive to the needs of our patients and nurses with excellent customer service.

· Process orders received from vendors (checking in items for good dating, and correctness, etc.).

· Take responsibility for communicating timely patient information to pharmacists as needed.

· Manages time for orderly completion of additional duties.

· Provides suggestions and opinions related to the department in an open and constructive manner.

· Uses Tray Checking technology to process used medication trays.

· Makes sure we have unit dose stock, by unit dosing bulk medications with packager for distribution.

· Maintains a clean and orderly work area.

· Communicates with fellow technicians to collaborate on unaccomplished tasks that need to be done.

· Assists with extemporaneous compounding.

· Manages and refills medication stock in automatic dispensing machines in all patient care areas in a timely manner.

· Provides care appropriate to the age of patients served pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients based on principles of growth and development and life stages.

· Answers telephone and conveys information in an accurate, timely manner identifying self as technician staff.

· Attends to customers at front window.

· Maintains accuracy of perpetual inventory for all controlled substances.

· Participates in compounding of extemporaneous preparation of medication.

· Orders from wholesaler via computer system.

· Screens medication orders for appropriateness.

· Maintains adequate supply of pharmaceuticals and related materials.

· Performs critical dosing calculations for patients of all ages, and then has it reviewed by a pharmacist before completion.

Performed occasionally but critical to successful performance of the job:

· Participates in hospital educational programs.

· Participates in Drug Utilization Evaluations and Quality Improvement programs.

Decision making and budget responsibilities:

· Decision impact limited to the employee.

· No budget responsibility.

· Provides care appropriate to the age of patients served infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients based on principles of growth and development and life stages.

· Demonstrates awareness of safety measures.

· Manages time for orderly completion of additional duties.

· Functions as a cooperative, flexible team member in a positive manner.

· Provides suggestions and opinions relating to the pharmacy department.

· Consistently utilizes problem-solving techniques to resolve complaints or concerns in and out of the pharmacy department.

· Excellent customer service skills.

· Reads, writes and speaks conversational English

· Deals with multiple demands in a fast-paced pharmacy in an accurate efficient, calm and pleasant manner.

· PC skills and proficient at typing.

· Presents a personal appearance and interpersonal skills that make a good first impression.

· Bilingual skills a plus.
