The Registered Respiratory Therapist and Certified Respiratory Therapy Technician are capable of setting up and operating various types of equipment to be utilized in the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory disease and or illness. The therapist provides administration of respiratory specific gases and medications, and modes of therapy for the respiratory compromised patient. Responds to emergencies throughout the hospital. Advises on arterial blood gas results. Assists in the transport of mechanically ventilated patients. May assist in the ordering of department supplies. Takes and records verbal and telephone orders from physicians as necessary. Acts as a resource person to nurses, physicians, residents, interns, respiratory staff, students and other hospital staff in regard to initiation and operation of all respiratory procedures. May assume a Charge role in the absence of the Respiratory Supervisor. Takes an active part in attending departmental in-service/education programs. Participates in Quality Assurance programs, and participates in department and/or HHC committees. Work schedule includes working alternate weekends and holidays. Performs all other duties as assigned
