Herzog is Hiring a Signalman/Signal Maintainer Near San Jose, CA

Overview

TransitAmerica Services, Inc. is currently seeking a Signalman/Signal Maintainer in Menlo Park, CA to join our team. The Signal Maintainer is a technical position responsible for testing and maintaining communication and signal equipment with direction from Signal Supervisor.

The pay range for this position is $38 - $60 per hour.

Duties and Responsibilities:

*This is a non-exhaustive overview of the job duties for this position.

  • Responsible for the repair, maintenance, testing, and inspection of all highway grade crossing warning, train control devices, located along the railroad system (i.e. automatic block signal systems, traffic control systems, train control, interlocking systems, railway highway grade crossing protection, and other similar devices, appliances, and systems).
  • Responsible for the repair and maintenance of power switch machines.
  • Documents work activities and inspections in accordance with Railroad, State Department of Transportation (DOT), and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) requirements.
  • Responds to trouble calls regarding signal failures during and outside of normal work hours (including nights and weekends, holidays).
  • Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position. Install, inspect, test, repair and maintain communication/signal, train control and electrical equipment.
  • Load and unload supplies, dig holes and trenches for cable, climb poles and signal masts.
  • Handle cable and wire to make electrical connections.
  • Use non-power tools (shovels, picks, axes, sledgehammers); high precision measuring tools (micrometers, voltmeters, amp meters, recorders); hand tools (screw drivers, wrenches, pliers, tape measures); power tools (drills, wrenches, power saws)
  • Regular and consistent engagement, participation and promotion of Herzog’s Culture and its essential behaviors are a requirement for this position.
  • Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED Certificate required.
  • Valid driver’s license required; Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred.
  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to meet necessary deadlines.
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Computer experience preferred.
  • Mechanical comprehension and electrical experience interpreting schematics and diagrams preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing using the English language.
  • Previous signal maintenance training or experience preferred.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and endorsements as required per position.
  • Pass pre-employment DOT physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position.
  • Must successfully pass color/vision examinations as required by the position.
  • Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described below must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions of this role. This position will be physically demanding at times. This is a non-exhaustive overview of the physical requirements for this position.

  • Regularly lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Lift and transfer weight up to 70 pounds for a distance of up to 100 feet.
  • Work in extreme all-weather conditions; uneven surfaces; safety sensitive work environment.
  • Able to walk on uneven surfaces up to 1 mile.
  • Regularly ascend and descend an 18 step ladder with up to 25 pounds. Frequently climb on/off equipment.
  • Ability to work at heights of 25 feet or more.
  • Regularly push/pull with a body force of up to 50 pounds.
  • Use hands to regularly grasp or squeeze wrenches, switches requiring force up to 60 pounds.
  • Must successfully pass color/vision examinations as required by the position.
  • Must be able to hear and distinguish auditory signals.
  • Able to work in conditions with loud noise; work on/around heavy/moving machinery.
  • Regularly kneel, bend, squat while transferring up to 25 pounds of weight.
  • Regularly sit and stand for an extended period of time.
