Discipleship Coordinator

POSITION OBJECTIVES: This highly visible position is responsible for engaging students in grades 5-12 with the primary goal of building relationships with students that are spiritually encouraging, redemptive and instructive. The major responsibilities of this position are to provide support to the Discipleship department, specifically with our new students, chapel planning, and discipleship programming.

QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICS: The employee must be a Christian with an authentic and a mature personal relationship with Jesus Christ, who agrees to the HCS Statement of Faith, Charter of Core Values and Employee Covenant in both their professional conduct and personal lifestyle. The employee is committed to incorporating these qualities and standards in carrying out the calling to Christian education. This person must have the desire and ability to work closely with students, teachers, parents, staff and school administrators. The desire and ability to exercise good judgment, come alongside students, nurture students, set a good example, and comply with school standards is required. While working in a discipleship environment with students, parents and faculty; confidentiality is a must. A gentle, tactful but steadfast nature, with the ability to listen and quickly discern the source of an issue is essential. 

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:  At least a bachelor’s degree in one of the following is required. Christian ministry, education, psychology, and/or counseling. Additional Bible training is preferred. Prior work experience leading youth from diverse backgrounds, leading small groups, and providing spiritual counseling is essential.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Collaborative and able to work well with a team
  • Keen ability to develop relationships, especially with teens
  • Highly organized and detail oriented, yet flexible and creative
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to create and manage student groups, programs and events
  • Proficient with a computer, specifically microsoft and google applications

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide support to our new students
  • Cultivates relationships with students that create opportunities to develop leaders, encourage seekers, and initiate conflict resolution among students.
  • Engages students using a variety of interaction during the school day opportunities to better understand teen culture and obtain student feedback including but not limited to student life/student council leadership & activities.
  • Offers biblically-based student counseling under the direction of the Director of Discipleship.
  • Develops opportunities and creates space to mentor students; identifies, encourages and equips student leaders; creates, leads and oversees small groups.
  • Provides assistance in discipline issues involving students when called upon by principals
  • Assist the Director of Discipleship with programming such as chapels, evening events for students, back to school events, etc.
  • Support students by attending sporting events, Fine Arts events, such as musical, play, concerts, and other evening activities
  • Attend Admissions events, which typically occur in evening hours during the school year and summer break

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to meet physical requirements of the position. Must be able to traverse campus. Must be able to use a computer and other audio-visual equipment. Must be able to ascend and descend stairs. Must be able to communicate with others. Specific vision abilities required in this position include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to hear low volume sounds. Must be able to assist students for health and safety reasons.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Office and school setting; frequent interactions with students, interruptions expected; works alone and with others, uses computers and phones, may encounter weather when moving around campus

WORK SCHEDULE:  The schedule will follow school operation days with typical work hours of 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and may include evenings and weekends, as needed. In addition, this position will work 20 days during summer break.
