The incumbent will work with the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) and with Sports Medicine Injury Prevention (SMIP) athletic trainers and physical therapists at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton to provide athletic training services and research support for projects assessing effectiveness of new interventions for ankle injury and instability. The candidate will be required to execute a full range of direct athletic training procedures, evaluation, and treatment services for military personnel as part of standard care and innovative research protocols. The candidate will conduct a number of research and treatment services and functions in overall support of the research programs for NHRC, Camp Pendleton, and collaborating institutions. The candidate will conduct requisite research duties for this project under NHRC direction, and requisite athletic training duties under SMIP direction.
HJF is seeking an Certified Athletic Trainer/Research Specialist to provide administrative project oversight in order to maximize the effective use of project resources. Specific areas include: overall research project coordination, study regulatory compliance, participant recruitment and retention, and data collection. The position requires practical knowledge of research methods along with knowledge of medical terminology and research experience. Provides onsite coverage and injury care and assists physicians in treating musculoskeletal injury or disability.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide a full range of direct athletic training (AT) services for military personnel, including but not limited to: comprehensive evaluation, assessment, and treatment of musculoskeletal and other conditions.
  • Apply study related interventions and routine standard of care treatments, when appropriate. Assist with data collection in adherence to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Good Clinical Practices (GCP) assessment measures including range of motion, muscle strength, electromyography, and pressure and forceplate measurements.
  • Assists with the administrative logistics including consenting, data collection, and scheduling.
  • Maintains subject files and documents and all correspondence pertinent to the research study.
  • Communicates in a professional manner with study team and attend team meetings.
  • Provide education, instruction, and guidance to Service members and unit leadership, within scope of practice, to include assisting with the development of training materials to support the unit’s requirements and study PI’s and Commander’s intent.
  • Communicate with SMIP staff, medical staff, and military commanders with regard to injuries or illnesses in accordance with USMC regulations. Act as a liaison between PI, local study staff, SMIP staff, and military commanders at MCB Camp Pendleton and other study sites.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
  • Some travel may be required to other research sites to assist with data collection or NHRC offices as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Advanced knowledge of athletic training theory, musculoskeletal injury evaluation methods and rehabilitation techniques, professional medical rehabilitation and therapeutic principles.
  • Extensive clinical experience and training with integrating complex medical conditions and designing individualized treatment plans based on documented objective findings from the evaluation process.
  • This job requires strong clinical research and interpersonal skills. Ability to develop rapport with patients and clinic/hospital/research staff to develop confidence and cooperation. Well-developed clinical, analytical, and problem-solving skills and excellent communication skills.
  • The ability to prioritize tasks to meet timelines and deadlines.
  • Candidate must be fastidiously organized, very flexible, and able to work under limited supervision either as a member of a team or, where appropriate, independently.
  • Advanced computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and people skills are required.
  • Experience in human subjects research and conducting clinical research.
  • Experience working in a military clinical setting and/or with military populations preferred.
Physical Capabilities:
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer or with patients for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects.
  • Ability to hike over rough terrain and lift/manipulate loads up to 50 pounds are required.
Qualifications:
Work Environment:
  • This position will take place primarily in a medical center setting and will also routinley involve field/clinical settings. 
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree Sports Medicine or related field. May require degree from a college or university accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Master’s degree in a related field (e.g. Biomedical Engineering, Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Medicine) preferred.
  • Level I: Minimum of 0-2 years experience required.
  • Level II: Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant AT work experience required.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Current certification as required for membership in the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA).
  • A Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider by the American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) or the American College of Emergency Physicians.
  • Ability to be licensed as an athletic trainer in California.
Compensation:
  • The likely salary range for this position is $19.90 USD to $30.00 USD per hour. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensations or salary. Final salary will be determined based on market analysis, experience, and education.
Some positions or sites may require that the incumbent be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination may be required.
