The Henrico County Public Library System Consists of five area and four branch libraries, Mobile Library Services, a law library, and Library Administrative Offices. General Statement of Duties
Closing Date: This position closes on Monday, May 13, 2024.
Provides front line customer support, information services and outreach services at one assigned customer service area (e.g. children, teens/digital media or adults) to effectively promote reading and lifelong learning; assists with collection management; plans, schedules, develops and facilitates programming for one assigned service area at an assigned library; does related work as required.
Essential Duties
Henrico County Public Library seeks a Librarian I to support Information Services at area libraries. Current vacancies include:
  • Librarian I for Children's Services at the Twin Hickory Area Library
This posting may be used to fill additional Librarian I positions in various service areas (Children's, Adult, Teen) throughout the library system. These positions will provide information services, reader's advisory, classes and programming, and outreach services to library users and the local community.
Requirements for this position include:
  • Experience working with patrons in a library setting
  • Planning and providing programs and outreach
  • Extensive knowledge of Readers Advisory principles, library and information science, and community development as it relates to library service.
  • Demonstrated experience with content creation, computer instruction, customer service, and project management.
  • Ability to write and speak effectively
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to resolve difficult interactions with library users; a commitment to continuous learning, and general library service
  • Awareness of and ability to learn new technologies; and strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Considerable knowledge of library organization, procedures, and policies
  • Considerable knowledge of reference sources and materials
  • Ability to plan and schedule workloads
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and with the general public.
Primary assigned duties include:
  • Responding accurately to patron needs and inquiries
  • Developing, scheduling and facilitating programming for one assigned service area.
  • Demonstrates sound working knowledge of the principles and practices of library science
  • Sound working knowledge of the programming, resources and best practices for one assigned service area
  • Sound working knowledge of Library policies and procedures.
  • Primary assigned duties will include one or more public service areas.
  • Work is performed as assigned at locations Countywide with minimal direction from the supervisor and senior staff.
  • Works closely with supervisory teams to ensure that HCPL and Henrico County standards of customer service are met to ensure smooth operation of the facility.
  • May act as Librarian in Charge in the absence of the Manager or Assistant Manager.
Additionally:
  • Provides front line customer support and information services in one or more assigned customer service areas (e.g. children, teens, digital media, adults) to effectively promote reading and lifelong learning
  • Provides electronic reference/online information services
  • Delivers increasingly complex support to patrons including one-on-one support and readers advisory, sound working knowledge of materials in all formats
  • Develops, schedules promotes, implements, and evaluates fresh, relevant programming that serve the interests and needs of the community, the target audience, and the library
  • Coordinates outside presenters as needed
  • Enters programming in events/ calendar software for necessary approvals
  • Recommends and coordinates marketing with Library's Community Relations Division
  • Teaches established curricula, which may include computer or digital media classes, surveys participants and reports results to supervisor and other appropriate Library staff
  • Participates in outreach activities including facilitating tours of the Library with a wide variety of visitor groups; participates in community events
  • Facilitates other onsite and community-based outreach activities
  • Assists with collection management by providing patron feedback to the Collection Management Division, selects and deselects appropriate materials for assigned service area and performs other duties in support of assigned service areas such as creating displays and assisting patrons with interlibrary loan requests
  • Serves on committees and special projects as assigned
  • Attends all scheduled meetings and required training and maintains all required certifications
  • Enrolls in and actively participates in the Emerging Leaders Program or other County-sponsored leadership classes
  • Trains Public Services Specialists, volunteers and other Library staff as assigned; handles complex and or sensitive complaints appropriately
  • In absence of supervisor may perform various building responsibilities, including open and close duties
  • May serve as the person-in-charge of a service area or a building as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • May require the ability to work at various locations within the County.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a Master of Library Science (MLS) with relevant previous experience preferred.
Additional Information
A criminal history record check and fingerprinting is conducted on all persons conditionally offered employment, including a conditional offer of initial employment, or a conditional offer to promote, demote, or laterally transfer an employee.
Possession of a Librarian's Certificate issued by the Virginia Board for the Certification of Librarians.
May require a valid driver's license to perform assigned duties at various locations.
This position is part of a Career Development Series and does allow for advancement opportunities within the position and can be filled at any level.
These are 40 hours/week positions. Night and weekend work is required including Sunday hours on rotation.
Please be aware that while we are hiring for this position, at anytime staff can be moved to other location or services areas for the good of the library.
